Real Solutions for Your New Year’s Resolutions
The older we get, the faster the time seems to pass. New Year’s Eve has always been an exciting time of the year. It is when friends gather to celebrate, when we reflect on the passing year, and we contemplate the possibilities of “what could be” in the next 12 months. This is the time when most people are compelled to create New Year’s resolutions that often turn into empty promises. The question is, do you take the goals seriously or are you creating them because society says you should?
Too often we set goals, but don’t put enough thought into how we will achieve them. Sometimes the goal seems too big or overwhelming so we avoid tackling it. Sometimes we don’t have a clear vision of what we want and so we avoid getting started. Whatever the reason for the procrastination, creating the same goals every year that you never complete affects your self-esteem and confidence. So let’s make a pact this year that our goals will be realistic, achievable, and thoughtful.
Identify Your Vision
So how do we create goals? We start with a vision that focuses on the big picture. What do you want? If you could do or have anything in the world what would it be? Search inward and develop a list of the areas in your life that you would like to change, such as personal relationships, career, weight, or self-image. This list will lead you to your goals. Write them down somewhere you can refer back to on a regular basis.
Create a SMART Plan
Keep in mind that a goal without a plan is just a dream. Goal planning is the key to your success. Now that you know what you want, evaluate it and determine what is realistic for you to achieve in a month, in 6 months, in a year, in 5 years. Break down your goals into small, achievable steps so that they are not overwhelming. Write them down as your mini goals. Determine what it will take to achieve each step of the goal. Remember to make your goals SMART, which is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. What do you need to do? What do you need to have? How are you going to accomplish that? Yes, write down everything. Finally, put a due date next to each step. This is to hold you accountable as well as to help you be realistic. Plan what you will do, when you will do it and how you will do it. Oh by the way, every time you meet your goal, reward yourself. In fact, part of your goal setting is to write down what your reward will be for each mini goal when (not if) you accomplish it.
Find Support Resources
Find a partner who will hold you accountable. The best partner is either someone who has the same goal as you so you can motivate each other or a coach who has no other intentions but to see you succeed. Friends and family members may not be the best choice. Even though they love you, seeing you accomplishing your goal may make you different now. People who have known you for a long time might not be comfortable with the changes and could try to stand in your way.
Create an INSPIRATION BOARD
Have fun with it. Use your creativity. Yes, you do have it. Buy a poster board. Pull out all your magazines. Cut out pictures and words. Look through your photo albums; pull out pictures that mean something to you. Paste all of these pictures and words on the poster board. What you want to have here are images and words that will inspire you and remind you of the goals you have set for yourself. An inspiration board helps to visually reinforce your vision and keep you on track.
Journal your every step. When you set your goals, you wrote them down and created a plan of action. Though that was a great first step, it is not enough. It also helps to keep a daily journal. Keep track of what you did, how you did it, and how did it work or not work. What did you learn? What were your daily successes? What were your proud moments? Also, don’t forget to write down how you felt. By the way, you can use this journal not only to learn from, but also to review your accomplishments. Go back to your journal when you are feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unmotivated and re-read it. This is a great way to build your self-esteem and see how far you’ve come.
Lastly, wear a rubber band around your wrist. This is not a joke. Every morning review your goal journal and evaluate where you need to be and what you need to do. During the day if you find yourself veering away from your goal, snap the rubber band. Yes, it will sting a little. That is the point. Use the rubber band as a simple reminder to keep you on track.
Now that you have all these tricks it’s time to get started. The New Year promises to be inspirational, exciting, and productive. Don’t forget, you are not at it alone. If you are having trouble, you can always seek professional’s advice to get you started or to help you in the middle of the path.
