Celtic Music: The Japanese Connection
My friend guitarist Brian Hughes went to Chieftain’s in Japan as the opening act with Loreena McKennitt. He then went on to perform with the Chieftains in North America and Europe while they were promoting their Santiago album. In Japan, they played about ten shows between Tokyo and Osaka, mostly at the soft-seat classical concert hall. Seating ranges from 1500 to 4,000. They are booked through a Plankton agency specializing in Celtic music. Despite the enthusiastic audience, Brian feels that Celtic music is still a niche market in Japan.
Celtic and classical Japanese music: a comparison
If you listen to a lot of traditional Japanese music, they have a bitter quality similar to traditional Celtic music. Japanese minor pentatonic scales are different from the West, but some of the phrases, especially when they go big, may be Irish or Scottish folk songs. If you look at the traditional cross-border flute of shinobue, it really does not differ from the Irish flute or the Irish flute in terms of fingers. The technique of rolling and blowing by whistling or shinobue is similar.
Where to find Celtic music in Japan
Major brands in Japan all have Celtic music under license, and CDs are available for import. A well-known Irish music distributor in Japan is a company called Music Plant. I think they may have a relationship with Plankton. JVC (Japan Victor Corporation) has signed directly with ANAM. They recorded two albums for JVC and toured Japan three times. The talented young musician from the UK, Tim Edey, who played the accordion button on my latest album, Celtic Heartland, recently joined the group. There is a company in Tokyo called Trinity that specializes in importing traditional Celtic CDs, but I’m not sure they still work. Brian Cullen, an Irishman from Wicklow, now living in Nagoya, has his own brand for his own material market called Celtic Otter music, and he publishes a collection of ballads.
There is an annual Celtic festival in Tokyo at the Ryutsu Center. They have music and dance performances, fashion shows, arts and crafts exhibitions and workshops and seminars.
There is an organization called CCE Japan that offers lessons for most Irish instruments as well as Set Dance and Gaelic. CCE Japan is a Japanese subsidiary of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, an association for the promotion of
Japanese musician specializing in Irish instruments
There are some successful Japanese Celtic musicians. Isao Moriyasu, who started out as a classical musician, now specializes in Irish flute. He taught at Kunitachi College of Music and wrote books on Irish music. He often performed with his wife Masako, who played the Celtic harp, concertina and bodhran. Mayumi Nagaura, a member of The Rising Pints, also has her own group called BIRD. She is one of Bodhran’s best attacking tennis players. She encouraged many other Japanese to learn Irish instruments.
Western Celtic musicians in Japan
There were a few musicians who formed bands with foreign and Japanese members. Examples include Rising Pints and Eye Wish, which no longer work, as well as a group in Sendai called Callanish.
Pub Circuit in Japan
There are many Irish pubs in Japan such as Dubliners, O’Carolan’s, The Pint, The Warrior Celt, Shamrock with regular music. All Irish pubs also have regular sessions. Because rents are particularly high in major cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Kyoto, venues are smaller than you might expect in the US or Europe. Like many jazz clubs in the country, capacities range from 50 to 200 easily. Brian Cullen reports that the Osaka Dubliners claimed 600 customers on St. Patrick’s Day. Patrick’s a few years ago. I mean, that must be the maximum, and that is after a few pints. Westerners are usually surprised by the amount of cover charges. Generally, to see a group, a cover price of 3,000 yen is common. The price of the CD is still around 2,500 yen.
While Celtic artists are not family names like major rock stars, interest in Celtic music is likely to continue to grow in Japan for some time to come.
