Time Management Tips for Women – Making Time for Work, Family and Friends

A few years ago, when I was working for a technology consulting firm in the mid-1980s, I learned many hard-to-find lessons in time management. This is an exciting time for me as well as the industry due to the rapid advancement of technology. Our medium-sized company is growing rapidly and I recently took on the role of Director of Human Resources. This is a newly created role for the company and my boy is very excited. However, my natural tendency is to face the rigors and demands of my schedule.

I have traveled extensively to top universities to pursue all-round talent, train all new tenants, set up a human resource system, raise two young children and attend night classes. Yes, I got over my head. One day the owner sat down in my office (as he saw my project piling up) and asked me to write it down in 30 minutes enhancing what I was doing. Can you imagine! I feel completely ashamed! That was a moment I will never forget, as I realized I had never been taught to manage my time effectively.

Flash Forward 2011 I am now an in-house entrepreneur running Internet Marketing and Style Coaching business. And things can never be more difficult to get things done and create a project (like this bulletin) on time.

When I saw the picture of the mother holding the baby on the computer, I shook my head sadly. That image made the unproductive people even more stressed than you can imagine! There was a time when I was one of them, but not anymore. Let me share with you some of the most successful time management tips I know.

1) Clean up clutter from your workplace. Nothing creates more stress than seeing the piles and piles of half-finished projects. Suddenly they go away and notice an immediate peace that will affect your spirit.

2) Work alone without interruption. No TV, no music, no internet, if you focus on working from home to achieve the success you want, you have to stick to it for no reason. Now is a difficult time for me because I love some good music! Don’t get me wrong, I still make music, but not while focusing on finishing a project.

3) Do not pick up your phone. If you like me and have children, keep the phone quiet and check it every 15-30 minutes to see if you missed their call, no one else. Kids love articles, so use that tool to stay in touch. I am amazed by parents who do not like to text, especially with their children. How on earth can they and you continue to work by engaging in disruptive phone conversations throughout the day?

4) Select the time of day to respond to the email. We live in a society of overweight emails with items you sign up for and receive other secret emails appearing in your inbox. Whatever email accounts most users provide, there are sophisticated tools to help sort and prioritize your emails. Do not respond casually throughout the day, otherwise you will lose valuable time to stay focused and on task to accomplish what you really should be focusing on.

5) Turn off the time to increase to 30 minutes for the project – then relax. It is important to know where your time is going and what you are doing so you can adjust to moving forward. If you like me, managing many of your blogs, writing newsletters, coaches, clients, all board responsibilities while creating new and exciting projects. You can not emphasize the importance of managing time and energy when you are trying to start your own business or just be productive. You need to learn the value of blocking your time, block activities, and daytime scripts. Stretching sends vital oxygen to your brain and energizes your cells. Try it, it really works!

6) Keep your family and friends informed of your schedule changes. This is difficult for them to accept. Most people do not believe that you can make money from home, but oh! By responding to their requests, you are giving them permission to evaluate what you do. What’s worse is that you do not get the results you expect and we all know what leads to frustration, fighting and non-productivity.

7) I recommend going to bed early. Even “Cold and Hip” New York Times bestselling author and celebrity star Neil Strauss admits that the early morning schedule allows him to do more. You will find that you will get “2 hours of afternoon work” done within 30 minutes of morning productivity. Once again, I am sure success has come from the idea of working your own stone. Yes, that’s what you will become. Fragile!

It is better to wake up before sunrise because such habits contribute to health, wealth and wisdom. ~ Aristotle

If working from home means you can relax with a laptop and coffee in your hand at your local Starbucks or confused thoughts about what to do at home, you will not create the life you hope for. I’m sorry to say it will not happen.

Here’s how to do more. PERIOD

You need to pay attention to simple planning and time checklist.

The last thing you want to do every working day is set a schedule / checklist for the next day’s work. Create a template based on your current project and save time for each task.

To “create” this schedule, you will need to use a journal to keep track of how you are spending your time at the moment. Reminds me of my first story, “Keep track of my time?” Take a notebook with you for a few days and clearly write down what you are doing every 15 minutes. Do this throughout the day for three consecutive working days. You will then identify the things that are causing you to waste time and you can eliminate those things.

You may notice a pattern of falling into the trap of email checking, which then takes you to distant places, such as sports websites, fashion newsletters, and twitter. You see where to go and so is your time. See, that’s why having your schedule so important. It will take you back to where you need to be.

Finally, determine the time of day when you are most productive. What I have found is that it can interfere with other family activities. This is where the support of family and friends is crucial in filling those gaps so you can schedule tasks. Otherwise, you may find that success does not escape you in the long run until you apply these time-tested principles.
