Saving Money Tips – Manage Your Money the Good Old Fashioned Way

Lets think back to the good old days, (now I am thinking of going back to the 50’s and 60’s) when you hear stories about the housewives of these times and how they managed to keep the family finances in order and the way that they did this was using money jars / envelopes. During these years, there was no such thing as buy it now and pay for it later. There was no shopping with the credit card and finance was particularly hard to obtain.

The men and women of these times were forced to save their money, they had no option. If they wanted something they generally had to pay cash for it and this meant they learned the disciplines of saving and they learned to manage their money well. A lot can be gleaned from looking back to the past and the methods the men and women used can be passed on, as we can still use them today.

One of those important lessons is learning to divide your money up for different purposes. This can be done in a number of ways, such as using separate bank accounts / money jars / envelopes.

Clues

Firstly you need to think about what sorts of expenses you have in your life. Each of us are different as some of us are renting, some are paying off mortgages and / or multiple debts and some of us might be living at home with parents and have less costs than others. Whatever your situation is though, you will have commitments you need to meet, bills you need to pay and money you want to save so you can achieve any goals you are trying to attain in the future.

So think about your money and work out how you can divide your money up. A suggestion is to have money for the following purposes:

1. Money to spend on yourself each week

2. Money to put aside for your bills and regular commitments

3. Money for lifestyle

4. Money to save for your goals and the future

Let us look at each of these purposes individually:

1. Money to spend on yourself each week

This would include setting money aside for items such as:

  • Groceries
  • Entertainment
  • Eating out / Takeaways / Drinks
  • Petrol / Travel fares
  • Children’s pocket money
  • Sporting activities

Basically any time you find you have to dig into your pocket and grab money out to pay for something on a regular basis, such as weekly, should be included in this section. If you have an account / money jar / envelopes for this purpose you will be able to budget well and limit your spending in this area.

An area such as this one, that contains a lot of items that you have a lot of discretion over how much you spend, is where a lot of overspending can occur if you aren’t careful.

2. Money to put aside for your bills and regular commitments

This would include setting money aside for items such as:

  • Rent / Board
  • Home costs – rates / body corporate / repairs / maintenance
  • Car costs – registrations / services / maintenance
  • Loans / Credit card repayments
  • Insurances – personal / house / car
  • Children’s costs – education / uniforms
  • Health
  • Pets
  • Charity / Donations

The idea here is to put money aside for these bills and regular commitments so that when they are ready to fall due, you already have the money there to pay for them. You provide money for these expenses out of each pay you get by putting money into an account / money jar / envelope. Even if you have no bills in that particular week / fortnight / month you still put money aside, as each of us know there are certain months of the year when all of our bills fall due and this can put a real strain on the finances, especially if you haven’t saved some money ready for these heavy months.

3. Money to put aside for lifestyle

This would include setting money aside for items such as:

  • Clothes
  • Holidays
  • Special outings / activities – balls / concerts / plays / theatre
  • Sporting events
  • Presents
  • Personal Treats – massages / beauty treatments

Just like your weekly spending money we mentioned above, this area too has a lot of items you can spend a lot of money on if you aren’t careful and if you don’t budget well. By putting money aside into an account / money jar / envelope for these purposes when you want to go and spend money on any of these items, you can count up what you have already saved and then make a decision whether or not you do what you planned or defer it until you have saved some more money.

4. Money to put aside to save for your goals and the future

This would include setting money aside for items such as:

  • Personal goals
  • Emergencies
  • Future plans / events
  • Retirement

Everyone should have some goals for the future and this might include buying a home, travelling overseas, getting married, having children, retiring, buying a new car etc. Most goals have some monetary constraint attached and often the sooner we get started with our savings, the sooner we can reach our goals. If we look back to the men and women of the 50’s and 60’s they too had goals and dreams and in all reality their goals were probably no different to the sorts of goals and dreams each of us have today. However, they knew they couldn’t have their future, unless they saved for it.

Today with the advancement of technology and free cash society we can often have our dreams before we can afford them and often as a result of our actions we suffer for a number of years shackled by debts and never decreasing loans just because we didn’t pay cash for what we wanted.
