Lenny Looks at the Heisman

College football season is coming to an end and each week we look at the past of the Pac-10. Now is the time to wait a bit and see if we can get the crystal ball for last season’s big individual prize – the Heisman Trophy.

With championships, conferences and bowls, it is a tough trophy to give away in early December. Heck, back in 1974, a lot of votes were received before USC Anthony Davis ran hard on Notre Dame; So the great Archie Griffin defeated his first two Heismans. Two Heismans will be anemic compared to the four Beano Cook predicted for Irish QB Ron Powlus, but that is close to the point.

It is 2005 now and with the advent of instant communication, Heisman voters have the opportunity to watch the players until the last possible time before they submit their ballots. Last season, USC’s Matt Leinart won the title, defeating a strong cadre of runners. Up and a favorite for the title that will go into this season.

While Leinart will still be touring New York and having the opportunity to showcase the latest menswear, he will not be leaving with the hardware. Now it’s two horse races between Vince Young of Texas and RB Reggie Bush incomparable. Before Bush destroys Fresno State with one hand, I will vote for Young. Now it’s hard to say beyond the shadow of a doubt that the so-called VY is the best in the country.

Going into this weekend’s game, I want to say that Bush has the best chance of weeding when the sun rises. He played for the reigning national champion in the rivalry that gave Heisman the previous victory. Back in 1968, OJ Simpson ran a game called Red-23 Blast for a distance of 64 yards and a game decided on the Bruins. Bush had the same chance now, though, back in ’68, Juice ran for second in the country (at the time, the Bruins were first overall). Look for a fast-paced Bush to have a big game on the Bruins and strengthen some of the votes on national television.

Young plays against Colorado, which is rotten all the way and is hammered by Nebraska. The Buffaloes should be ashamed of the Turks they put on the pitch on Friday after Thanksgiving as Nebraska beat the ball out of it. I do not see Gary Barnett finding a way to plan against this multi-faceted Texas crime.

In the perfect college football world, we will have the Texas and Trojans meeting on January 4th in a win-win battle for the BCS National Championship and the Heisman Trophy. Of course, a perfect world would have a qualifying system, but I’m confused. In the perfect 2005 college football world, that’s what we will have. Until then, my election was for the so-called President: Reggie Bush.
