Create a Travel Log of Santa’s Vacation by Superimposing Images – Teaching With Technology

Connect the fun that kids have for the holidays with tech lessons!

Read “Mrs. Claus Vacation” by Linas Alsenas to your students. To begin with, Ms. Claus was devastated by the lack of vacations and travel. Daily chores like feeding reindeer seem boring. So she jumps in a wheelchair and travels the world for the day before Christmas. Santa Claus worries about her. She came back and they went on a night out.

After reading this story, ask students to think about where Santa and Claus might want to go. Santa has not been anywhere other than the North Pole for a long time, so imagine they are going on vacation.

Using either advanced photo software like PhotoShop or older like HyperStudio, students can combine two photos together. Have students search for copyrighted images on the Internet and save them. Then insert a background image. Then “cut out” pictures of Santa and / or Mrs. Claus and paste them over the background. This can look like Santa visiting Mount Rushmore, the Statue of Liberty, the Great Wall of China, or any other place you can imagine!

Then have your student create a journal entry that describes where he or she is and what he or she is doing there. For example, “Santa always wanted to visit Mount Rushmore. He usually just saw it over his head. This time he and Mrs. Claus took three days off to walk around the area.”

Type in the journal entry and add it to the photo above.

Once the page is created, there are a number of options:

1. Print each page. Bind into a travel diary for the class.

2. Combine all pages electronically and create a slideshow. Record the voice of each student reading his or her entry.

3. Transform electronic slideshow into podcasts and share them with the world. Publish it on your class or school webpage and submit it to iTunes.

Kids love this activity. It seems like the one they ask for from year to year.

So cheat on solid tech lessons with holiday themes and watch your students rush to the computer to start their project.

Last note: The same lesson can be done using the book “Journey to Freedom” by Kelly DiPucchio. In this story, the Statue of Liberty wants to look around the United States. Choose a background photo of a place in the US and then place it on Lady Liberty. Write about where she is and why she chose to stop there.
