A List of Drawing Mediums and Their Characteristics

Drawing Media

Drawing is a process or technique used, while medium is the actual material used to create a work of art. There are different drawing media that can be used to create a drawing. Each container is different and produces different effects. There are also different drawing techniques associated with each container. Many of these techniques are explored in the video art lessons listed above. (Remember that this drawing lesson list is included in the parallel base, so if the art or drawing lesson is not listed above, it may be coming soon. So check back often. .)

Graphics – Mostly called pencils or lead. Graphics are gray objects that come in different classes. “HB” is mostly called the No. 2 pencil and is found in the middle of the class. Softer graphic pencils are called “B” pencils and range from “B” (soft) to “9B” (very soft). “B” pencils generally darken due to the softness of the graphics. One drawback to “B” pencils is that they become dull easily. “H” pencils are made from harder graphics and range from “H” (hard) to “9H” (hardest). The “H” pencil makes the stain lighter but retains sharp points for longer. Graphics are also available in large pieces that are not in pencil. This graphic is used to cover large areas quickly.

Charcoal – While the graphics are precious gray, charcoal provides a rich dark color to create the painting. Charcoal is a combustible organic material and is usually some kind of wood. There are many types of charcoal. Vine charcoal is soft, making it lighter and easier to remove. Compressed charcoal is harder to darken and harder to remove. Charcoal is produced in both wood and pencil forms.

Colored pencils – Colored pencils are made from pigment panels bound together by a wax binder. Colored pencils come in different brands and prices. They are available almost everywhere.

Chalk Pastels- Chalk pastels are pigmented powders that are joined together by a gum binder. Finished chalk pastels can look like paintings and are often called paintings.

Oil Pastels – are colored pastes lined with linseed oil. They can be thinned and spread using traditional oil painting solvents. Finished oil pastel paintings are also referred to as paintings.

Pens and Inks – Inks applied to the surface through the use of pens are considered pens and ink. Ink comes in many different colors and can be painted with different pens. Hatching, Hatching, Crossing, and Stamping are commonly used techniques for drawing pens and ink.

Markers – Markers are usually used for design work. Markers are generally not permanent (although it may say something on the markers). Markers are therefore used in design, graphic design, industrial design and painting. Rarely are markers used for what is considered “fine art.”
