Tin-Cure and Platinum-Cure Silicones

Silicone rubber is the material of choice for many mold makers and performers. Excellent flexibility, good rigidity, improved durability and long service life in its favor, apart from the extensive use for almost any application.

Silicone rubber is a two-part formula that can be sprayed or brushed on a sample / mold. In fact, it is safe and can be used for both processing and molding as long as it suits your application. Another advantage is that the silicone does not stick to anything, so most emitting agents are not required.

Silicone rubber is often used for general mold making applications because molds can capture fine details and can form quickly. Most materials – all kinds of resins, foams, waxes and low-melting metals – can be easily cast into silicone molds. It is also suitable for soap and candle making, sculpture reproduction, cold acting. Special rubber variants can be used for making molds, food, realistic masks, recreation of dolls, special effects and even life inserts.

Types of silicon

There are two types of silicone rubber polymers – platinum – cured and tin. These two types are very different from each other and also do not match each other. Let’s find out how:

  • Tin-treated silicon rubber uses tin salt (usually 5%) as a catalyst to start the treatment from liquid to solid. This is also known as condensation treatment. Platinum cured rubber contains a platinum catalyst (usually 10%) for curing and is known as an additive treatment.

  • Tin-treated silicone needs moisture for proper healing, and excess moisture can speed up the healing time, while moisture has no effect on platinum healing at all.

  • Tin-cured variants are less expensive and prove to be easier to use, while platinum-based products turn out to be very expensive.

  • Silicone molds and tin-treated steel bars can tend to shrink gradually, while platinum-treated parts enjoy almost no shrinkage.

  • Tin-based silicones are resistant to tearing and are even considered to be metabolizable. Its counterpart is considered flexible and tough.

  • Platinum-cured silicone provides exceptional heat resistance and performs better at higher temperatures than tin-plated coatings. The former can be heat accelerated for faster healing.

  • Platinum-treated silicon requires proper and careful mixing, but this is not the case with tin-based coatings.

  • Tin-treated silicon is primarily suitable for the production of general silicone molds, sample applications and artificial work. Platinum-cured silicon provides excellent dimensional stability and good performance for clear mold production, special effects applications, packaging and coatings. The latter are also available in Food Safety, Skin Safety and Transparent versions.

So continue to make your silicone mold by all means, but choose silicone rubber carefully.
