Give Yourself (and Your Pitch) the Greatest Opportunity to Succeed
You have great products / services that solve current or future problems. You are the person / team that creates the solution. However, if you can not confidently disclose this information, the odds are that you will not be able to get others to help / fund you. If this is unfortunate, you will become a business equal to a screenwriter with an inscription for an unreleased film.
So how do you create, develop and deliver your information successfully? There are indeed many ways to accomplish this. Here’s a way and it works!
Think about your presentation.
In order to provide an opportunity for investors, you need to present your presentation with two perspectives in mind.
Of course, one is from the perspective of potential customers, including:
What is their problem.
How it affects their lives.
How your solution will help them change their lives or make their lives easier.
Another view is investors. This includes:
What is the problem
Your solution to that problem.
How your solution differs from others
The financial viability of your solution.
Your / your team’s ability to execute plans.
Express your thoughts.
As human beings, we learn to understand and remember through stories. To get your audience involved so that they can see how you would provide a valuable solution to a difficult problem, tell them something.
To see your product / service as a story, think this way.
Who / what is a villain? (Problem you are solving)
What are the bad guys threatening to do or are doing?
What does this look like?
How does this feel?
Who are the heroes? (Your product / service)
What obstacles does the hero have to overcome? (Competition, funding, market awareness?)
What superpower does the hero need? (What address do you have above?)
How will the hero fight the bad guys? (How will your solution overcome the problem and grow?)
What good is a web site if it simply “blends in” with everything else out there?
Exercise is the key
Once you have created your presentation, it is time to rehearse. I know this is not necessarily fun, but it is necessary. Think about it. An actor in front of an audience without rehearsing? Of course not.
People often ask, “How often do I have to practice?” The easy answer is to practice until you know your presentation like you know your favorite song. However, you do not have to know it word for word. Actually, you do not want to. But you must be curious about your mind and its content.
Remember your phone.
This is a great way to practice. Before you begin, pick up your phone and place it on the video recorder. Now rehearse. When you are ready, play the recording, but do it this way.
First, play it with your phone facing down. This way you will focus on your voice. Make a note of how you pronounce and if there are any changes you would like to make.
Second, turn off the sound and watch it now. By doing this, you will focus on your body language and the message it is sending. Make a note of how you look and if there are any changes you would like to make.
Third, play it the way you want to watch and listen. Make a note again of what you would like to improve, delete or change.
Now it’s time for the slide.
Once you have created, rehearsed and improved your presentation, it is time to create your slide show. That’s right! To create an attractive presentation, you select / create your slide after you have created your presentation. Unfortunately, most people do it the other way around, which usually causes a boring “I want to stick a rusty fork in my eye” presentation that we see too often.
Before we go anywhere else, please understand this point. There is nothing like a PowerPoint presentation, only slides, and these slides only support your presentation.
Many people create too many slides. This is a waste of your time and the interest and patience of your audience. So how many are enough? Enough to get the job done, but not much that hurts more than good. As it is with so many things in life, less is more.
Pitching is speaking, not reading
Do not use your slide as a teleprompter. Reading your slides starts with not being prepared, and if people think you have not prepared for your game, they are less likely to reward you.
And besides, there are so many bullets on the slide so you remember what to say (which you do not want to do) why did you have it there? They do not benefit your audience. Think about it, having a lot of seeds on a slide is tantamount to keeping your handwritten notes for your audience every time you come up with a new idea. You will not do it with your handwritten notes, so do not do it with your slides. Instead, use slides to support your main points.
Another reason you want to know your pitch well and not rely on slides as speakers is the possibility of technical issues. Get ready for everything, including pitching without technology.
Take it personally
Now that you have created your entire presentation, rehearse it, edit it, and rehearse it. Showing it in front of people (family / friends / colleagues). You do not want to wait until your actual presentation to show it in front of people for the first time. Do this until you are comfortable with it.
Ask people questions so you learn how to best respond to the questions your audience can ask you. Again, you do not want the real story to be the first time you try it.
Memorize two stories
Earlier I said do not memorize every word you want to know your thoughts and speak to them. This is completely true. However, you should create a powerful opening and closing sentence or two, and for the greatest effect, memorize those words.
Memorizing your opening helps you to start strong, attracting your audience immediately. Memorizing your closure provides an attractive ending that pushes your point home.
Probably the hardest thing.
The day of your presentation, avoid caffeine and sugar. Both improve your body and brain when you are trying to relax them. Also, refrain from alcohol for 48 hours prior to your presentation. It is converted into sugar, which causes the body and brain to be more active than you would like it to be when it comes time to show up.
Becoming an entrepreneur means you will always tell others about the products, services or companies you have created. Therefore, knowing how to convey that information effectively is paramount. Follow these tips and give yourself the most chance of success!
