Product Manager – What Does Your Business Card Say About You?

So here is a small topic that can be really important for all product managers: What do you put in? On your business card? Yes, yes, I know we live in the age of Facebook and LinkedIn, but business cards are still something we change when we meet people face to face. What that means is that business cards are still important. What’s on your business card?

At this time in my career I must have had at least 20 different business cards. From time to time I would see a collection of them gathered at the bottom of a folder somewhere, and I would smile when I realized that my description of myself and what I had done had changed over time.

I will never forget when I first had the opportunity to sign up for a business card. This is it, I made a big time. Despite being a low-level software engineer, I will now finally have an “adult” way to communicate with others how important I am. As with all large companies, most business card forms are pre-made. However, I was offered free to add my job title under my name. Hmmm, what to put? First out of the gate, I put what the company listed for me in the corporate directory: “Software Engineer IV” or whatever.

It turns out that this is a big mistake. Except for the people who work for my company, no one in the real world knows what Software Engineer IV is! I would get a nice smile and then the card would quickly disappear into someone’s pocket for maybe Dispose of when it is time to wash clothes.

Doing business cards a few times later made me smarter. So far, I have moved on to the world of product management, and so I changed my job title to “Product Manager”. This is much better. I do not think many people know what a product manager is or do, but they must have thought they knew what the manager did and when they got my card they dropped me. Be an intermediate manager and leave it at that.

Advertising came at a time, and while I was not yet vice president or CIO, I became a senior product manager. On the next occasion, I updated the business card title to read “Senior Product Manager”. This seems to give me a little honor when I pass the card. Again, I do not think many people know what I did. However, they seem to believe that I am now in a higher position as a middle manager.

I still find that because people generally do not know what product managers do, they are struggling to take refuge in me based on my title. The trick here is that if people can not quickly understand where you deserve to be a Totem, then they will not get tired of trying. I feel that one more evolution is needed. I ended up dropping the “product” and so today my business card reads “Senior Manager”.

Although less descriptive, I found the title very useful at trade fairs and when meeting vendors. No, they still do not know what I do for the company. However, they can easily know that a “senior manager” is someone who must be very important. This means that I am considered important because they have no reason not to.

One last note, with my vague title, the first question I asked was, “What are you doing?” This is a question of creating or breaking. If I identify myself as a product manager, this would make me classified as a low-level worker bee because no one knows what a product manager does. Through countless encounters like this, I respected my quick response, “I made the problem go away.” In most cases this creates a respectful silence and there are no more investigative questions.
