A Brief History of T-Shirt Printing

Look chic in printed T-shirts not only add style to your look, it depends on the number of printed T-shirts providing great uniqueness. But have you ever stopped to think about where it started and how long people have been printing T-shirts?

The modern screen printing process was first patented in Manchester by Samuel Simon in 1907.

Also a few years ago in Manchester, the first T-shirts began to emerge from the impoverished slums around textile mills, the region’s main employer. The T-shirt was quickly changed by street gangs known as vandals, who often intimidated local communities.

It was these smugglers who, as soldiers, wore their T-shirts under their uniforms in the trenches of northern France. This was quickly corrected by the U.S. military, leading to the T-shirt becoming a universal item of clothing. Images of Hollywood stars such as James Dean and Marlon Brando wearing white T-shirts have made this simple T-shirt a universal fashion item in the wardrobe around the world.

Although t-shirts and screen printing originated simultaneously in the same region, t-shirt printing was not popular until the invention of the plastic ink and youth movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

The Smithsonian Museum displays the ‘oldest printed T-shirt’ on record in their collection. It was the campaign shirt for New York State President Thomas Dewey’s 1948 presidential campaign.

T-shirt printing quickly became a vehicle for political protests and soon became part of social protests against the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement and the campaign for nuclear disarmament.

In the 1970s, the music industry realized that T-shirt sales were a lucrative addition to ticket prices and album sales. As Stones and Pink Floyd fans embarked on the famous T-shirt like Warhol Lips, The Dark Side Of The Moon prism became a million-dollar item. This also paved the way for the multi-million pound “bootleg” industry, which sold copies of official T-shirts outside the concert venue for a fraction of the price.

The need for blank T-shirts to print as established global businesses like Fruit Of The Loom and Gildan. Fruit Of The Loom employs 23,000 people and has annual sales of $ 500 million.

As the price of t-shirt printers has dropped, it has become easier to get started in the industry and with online auction sites like eBay selling t-shirts in small quantities becomes easier and cheaper to set up a business.
