Writing Essays – The Monster in Faulkner’s Story, A Rose for Emily
To help you write this literary article, here is a small analysis I did on William Faulkner’s highly acclaimed short story “A Rose for Emily” (Note: You may want to read and study the story online). Once you follow my reasoning. Here, so create another tab in your browser, then go to Google Search and type “A Rose for Emily” and be sure to type in quotes you can use ALT-TAB to move between this story and this article):
As I pointed out in other articles, every story, whether short or novel, must have some major changes at the end. This change is the most important thing to remember when you analyze and then write an article about something, whether short or long.
What is that change? Why the new aspect is reversed – always!
I will show you how to use the new three-step analysis process below on Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” which you then Can be used on any short story –
# 1 – At the beginning of the short story, a strong value statement, the old aspect, is given by or about the main character, asserting an evaluation or describing certain characteristics, goals or aspirations.
As we begin this ingenious short story, the old scene comes to us – it’s the very first sentence:
When Emily Grierson passed away, our whole town went to her funeral: Men through a category. Respectful love For the collapsed palace, most women are curious from the inside of her house, where no one rescues an old man, a gardener and a combined chef, for at least ten years.
Note that I was brave Respectful love. That sounds like a strong price statement, especially since “The whole city Went to her funeral. ” The question is, will that strong positive value change Emily at the end of the story?
# 2 – In the middle of the short story, the old aspect is backed up or reduced with conflict description and conflict resolution creating a new aspect at the end.
Now I will not comment on anything in the story. But did you notice that every part of the story has something to do with the townspeople’s respect for Emily? Sometimes there is even love along with respect.
Description: Many descriptions occur in this short story, but one story stands out from the rest. In the first part, after a brief introduction, the city council (city council) came to her palace to meet with Miss Emily to persuade her to pay taxes and – They got up as she entered – a small, fat woman dressed in black with a thin gold chain came down to her waist and disappeared into her belt, relying on a cane with a golden head stained. Her skeleton is small enough to swell her belly….
Note that Emily wears black in contrast. A thin gold belt came down to her waist and disappeared into her belt.. At the end of the chain, no doubt, is a watch that forms the eight figures of the chain with an invisible watch at the end above her belly. Her body was covered Black Clothes and her Swelling of the abdomenBoth face and abdomen while her arms and legs Small and empty Or as thin as the cane she holds.
We can not understand the significance of this description until a new aspect in the last episode of the story that I will suggest at that time. Just keep this description in mind OK? We will mention it again at the end of this discussion.
Disputes: In the second part, the neighbors complain that the bad smell from Emily’s house is polluting the neighbors. But the mayor Sincerely Refuse to talk to Emily about it Accuses woman of having bad breath.
Solution: To avoid conflict with Emily about odor, aldermen Sincerely Take it out at night Lime About the ground and in the basement of Emily’s house to get rid of odors. The odor disappears within two weeks.
Disputes: Also in the second part, Emily refused for three days to acknowledge that her father was dead and would not allow anyone to take her body to prepare for burial.
Solution: Citizens show Respectable Pity Emily without forcing her body to be taken to the funeral and burial. After three days, their. Respectable Compassion finally influences Emily, literally Broken Feel and let them in.
Disputes: The third part ends with a dispute that Emily has with a drug addict. She asked for some poison. But because he was required by law to record what the poison would use, the drug addict continued to try to get Emily to say she would do anything with the poison. But Miss Emily just looking at him. No matter what the drug addict says, she does not answer the question.
Solution: The drug addict gave Emily poison, despite the law. He just filled in the information himself. For miceWithout any input from her. He handed it over to Emily. Out of respect For her social position, there is no doubt, as we often see.
Conflicts and Resolutions: By the end of Part 4, minor disputes and settlements arose and passed quickly, with Emily winning another dispute because of the city. Respectful love For her: When the city received free postal delivery, Emily alone refused to let them attach the metal number above her door and attached the mailbox to it. She will not listen to them.
All disputes in the case Respectful love For Emily and Respect For her social position is something that resolves the conflict that the townspeople have with Emily’s conduct.
# 3. At the end of the short story, a new inverse aspect of the old aspect is usually presented.
In the fifth part of the story at Emily’s funeral, the townspeople wait Sincerely Until Emily is buried before they enter (which can also be considered a kind of dispute / resolution) upstairs of her mansion, which has been locked for years, perhaps Decades. The room was covered in fine dust and they found a rotten skeleton on the bed, apparently belonging to Homer, Emily’s boyfriend a decade ago.
In the pillows next to the skeleton was a surprise – they found a deep indentation that someone had to put their head on again and again, and more recently because they found in There. Long strands of iron hair – gray In line – Emily’s hair without a doubt since Faulkner described Emily’s hair as Gray iron.
This is a new aspect. Respectful love Of the locals at the beginning of the story Must Rotate, must Reverse Go strong Rebellion After they found out that Emily had killed her lover and slept with his decaying body for years, even decades. It needs some kind Disgusting monsters Do something like that!
With that in mind, remember Emily’s description in the first part: Small, obese, black women. While not a perfect match, the description is fairly close. Black Widow Spider. Remember the number eight – this. Thin gold chain Finished by seeing on a swollen abdomen? And Available Or thin LimbsWith the cane added the sixth type of limb, which one is more than half of the eight limbs of the spider? Remember fat, Swelling of the abdomen The body? So the scene of Emily killing her lover is like a black widow spider killing her boyfriend.
Why did the townspeople break into the locked room in the first place? They are not sure what is there, but they expect to find Something important There, obviously. And something that gives a new, inverted view of Respectful love For Emily, at least for the reader, if not for the townspeople as well.
Now, these sample thesis statements can help give you some ideas for writing a solid essay on William Faulkner’s brilliantly short story “A Rose for Emily.”
- Faulkner uses his short storyRoses for Emily, To illustrate the point that ‘human nature can be corrupted when an individual is given too many unattainable rights and too much affection.’
- In a shocking ending, William Faulkner’s short story, Roses for Emily, Shows how a society that adheres to a tradition of respect for social positions can be very tragic, erroneously wrong.
- In Roses for EmilyFaulkner repeatedly uses conflict and resolution to hammer home Respectful love The people of the city are there for Emily until the end.
- Pictures of the palace in Roses for Emily In addition to revealing Emily’s true character at the end, which has been hidden by the house for decades.
- In Roses for EmilySingle Long strands of iron hair – gray It eventually becomes a symbol that Emily has killed her boyfriend, which eliminates the incident of rat poison and Homer disappearance – not to mention the return of the city’s presence. Respectful love For Emily.
