John Jakes and His Historical Fiction Are Second to None

My favorite writing style is historical fiction. Because John Jakes has a huge collection of Americana Books that he has written and I really like his novels, I set my ambition to read everything I could. The first series I read was Kent Family Saga and it became my favorite. I read all eight episodes in the series, which began with “Bastard.”

Philippe Charbonneau was born with his mother’s name and later adopted his father Philip Kent when he was in the United States. He grew up in France. Actor Marie’s mother had an affair with a British nobleman, and Philip grew up without knowing the truth. He was raised in a poor state in France by his mother Inn. Marie wished her son one day reunited with a wealthy father in England. The duke has been sending some support over the years, but the father and son have never met.

When the truth came out when he was an adult, the mother and son went happily to Old England. Thinking that the duke was not at home, they met his brother and stepmother. They both did not hit it. The unfriendly siblings and his stepmother have no share of the other share in the inheritance. The two brothers fought. The duke did not know that Philip and his mother had been expelled. However, the wife of Philip’s brother became interested in Philip and soon a secret affair began while Philip stayed in the area for a while hoping for a fortune.

Eventually, they were expelled from the country by their brother, stepmother and staff. Marie has been heartbroken since her dream came true. Philip wanted to find his fortune in new territory and hoped to do so in the printing business. His grieving mother died on the way to the New World and she was buried at sea. Phillip lost the little money he left and came to America alone and without money.

Phillips found that Boston and the colony were ripe for rebellion when he arrived. They protested to the mother country against unfair taxation on the colony. He was under the spell of influential men like Sam Adams, Ben Franklin, Paul Revere and other pre-revolutionary elites. Also involved in the first disagreement was the lawyer father of his first love, Anne. They started the Kent clan and when she died he had more children with Peggy. Phillip met his brother again in the United States, now an officer in the British Army, as well as his widow after Philip had beaten him a second time. She tries to start a new love affair with him in vain.

It is a packing action and continues until the second novel “The Rebel”. In the second novel, he will take part in the American Revolution. He had just met Lafayette, whom he had known as a French boy.
