Boomers Blamed for Demise of Emoji

So, have you heard? After all, the laughing emoji has gone bad and using it is a sure sign that you’re old.

Stop the press!

Gen Z – those born after 1997 – seems to be the same on social media, especially TikTok.

This is despite the fact that emoji have become very popular since 2017. As a CNN article noted: “The face with tears of joy,” the official name for the laughing emoji, is the most used emoji on the website Emojitracker. will indicate.” In 2020, it was still the most popular emoji.

So, what happened?

Are the Baby Boomers to blame?

Of course, like everything else, we are to blame for its downfall. Jeremy Burge, emoji chief at Emojipedia, recently wrote a blog post saying: “It’s common wisdom on TikTok that the laughing crying emoji is for boomers. And by boomers I mean anyone over 35.”

God forbid, teenagers and young adults don’t want to use the same emoji as their grandparents! But we are not the only target as evidenced by Burge’s 35th comment.

It’s interesting that millennials (those born between 1980-1996), many of whom try to stay cool as they approach their 30s and 40s, also seem to be this time around. target Add to that the millennial use of this suddenly inappropriate emoji, calling your dog “doggo” (didn’t even realize that was a thing), skinny jeans, and even side pieces are out and it’s a sign you’re old and “are out. out of hand.”

As one millennial writer put it in an article for Yahoo!Sports: “Like a lifelong friend, oh.”

According to that article, Gen Z also makes fun of the way millennials use the word “coming of age,” their addiction to avocado toast and Starbucks coffee, and the way they refer to themselves as “90s kids.”

It’s Karma Folks

What’s funny about all of this is how many millennials have been making fun of us cheaters for years.

Remember the popular saying, “OK Boomer” that started a few years ago? As I wrote in a blog on the subject, this term seems to tell us that optimists are old-fashioned, resistant to change, behind technology and out of touch.

So, I guess, what goes around comes around.

Anyway, I hate to see someone use insulting and offensive terms based solely on what generation people are born into – which by the way, is completely out of our control. One day, Gen Z will grow old and surely taste their own medicine. Everyone gets old eventually, you know.

Personally, I’m tired of the way all social platforms have made it so easy to insult each other. I’m tired of getting old. I wish mutual respect would replace this senseless mocking of each other. Why can’t the “generation gap” become ugly and outdated?

That being said, don’t stress too much, millennials. One day, you’ll be our age and you won’t notice as much as other people think.

After a recent viral TikTok listing all the things millennials do that Gen Z disapproves of, millennials responded by defending their fashion choices, hair and emoji usage. They noted that Gen Z once encouraged each other to eat Tide Pods as a viral challenge and that young people lacked the ability to write in cursive. So there is! But does all this really matter?

Relax, millennials, you’ll reach the age where you won’t care what anyone else thinks about your emoji habits and you won’t feel the need to defend your choices.

Honestly, I think this bummer would use more of a screaming emoji to be rebellious. And my side remains. And even though I’m not a millennial, I do enjoy avocado toast on occasion.

That’s the great thing about growing up, as I wrote when I turned 60. I know what’s important, and overuse of emoji is not one of them! Make fun of us, but being old is liberating in this sense.

Don’t worry, millennials. You will get there.
