Different Body Types Explained – Ectomorph, Mesomorph & Endomorph

An American psychologist, William Sheldon (1898-1979) spent his life observing the human body. From his observations, he developed three main categories into which the human body falls, based on the types of physical body.

These three body types are: Ectomorph, Mesomorph and Endomorph. These three main classifications are based on bone structure, muscle and how the body produces and stores fat tissue. All people fall into one category or a combination of them.

Ectomorph

People who are Ectomorphs have small and narrow frames, are thin and are classified as “Hard Gainers” by the bodybuilding world.

They are lightly muscled by nature and have trouble developing muscle tissue. Their metabolism is usually pumped and they don’t store a lot of fat in the usual places.

Many ectomorphs look ripped and this can be very deceiving as physical strength does not usually equate to muscle size.

Their arms are long compared to their body height, making them appear to be thinner than they really are. In general, their hands, fingers, feet, legs and neck are long and slender.

Ectomorphs have well-defined, often sharp facial features and narrow or triangular faces. Their hair is usually fine, often unruly and fast growing.

Due to their thin skin, lack of body fat, and body area versus muscle mass, ecomorphs are often more affected by heat than their normal brethren; they suffer from excessive heat or cold.

Some ectomorphs have been able to gain muscle size and strength, but it is a struggle for them to make big gains without hard work and a high protein diet. Success can be achieved however; Think Brad Pitt in “Troy”.

Mesomorph

Those athletic men and women with curvy bodies (men) or hourglass figures (women) are most likely Mesomorphs. These body types have large bones with prominent muscles. Their facial features are defined and muscular with heavy cheekbones and jaws.

The mesomorph’s skin is thicker and their hair is heavier. Their arms and legs are well developed and their hands and fingers are muscular. Most of the top bodybuilding champions are mesomorphs. For example, Arnold Schwarzenegger is a pure mesomorph.

Good posture, muscle mass and muscle flexibility are common characteristics of the mesomorph. They also gain weight much more easily than an ectomorph.

Endomorph

Soft, round bodies, underdeveloped muscles and difficulty losing weight are characteristics of the extreme Endomorph.

They gain muscle easily and their upper arms and thighs are heavier than their forearms or legs. They are usually tall, but their legs are short in proportion to their body height.

Endomorphs usually have small hands and feet compared to their overall size. Their heads are big and their faces are wide. The late John Belushi (Animal House, The Blues Brothers) seems to be a typical endomorph.

Good exercise and diet programs will produce results for an endomorph, with diet being critical to shedding body fat. It is best for them to eat five or six small meals (3-400 calories) a day to keep their metabolism in “digestive mode”.

Common Body Types

Very few people can be so easily categorized. While most of us fall into one of the general categories, very few people are completely one type. We often exhibit characteristics of other body types, and will be categorized as ecto-mesomorphs or endo-mesomorphs.

People of all body types can be successful bodybuilders, although most of us don’t have the dedication and commitment (let alone the money) to a good exercise program, we can all achieve a high level of health, fitness and muscle mass from a good exercise program and a proper diet.

However, our fitness programs should be tailored to our body types and how we grow muscle and carry body fat.
