Heat Therapy at Home For Managing Muscle Pain

Heat therapy is an effective way to treat muscle stiffness and pain. Warming up the muscle tissue increases blood flow to the tissues which increases the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the muscle tissue and helps flush out toxins that cause pain.

The most common forms of heat application at home these days are using a heating pad or hot water bottle. Some people can also take a hot shower or bath. I have had clients tell me that they heated their muscle tissue using a hair dryer.

Always use caution when using heat therapy. To get good results, you need a little heat, but you don’t want to damage your skin. Please do not use a hair dryer as this will definitely dry it out and may damage your skin. A heating pad is a good method of applying heat, but not the most effective. The heat should penetrate your muscle tissue without burning your skin. You should be able to tolerate the heat comfortably while feeling it slowly sink deep into your tissues.

Moist heat is more effective than dry heat. Why? Because water heats up faster than air. So the moist heat will penetrate your muscle tissue faster and more effectively. I always thought it would be pretty cool in our back yards. So, what do you do? Well, a hot shower or bath can really do the trick. If you take a bath consider adding good old fashioned epsom salts to the bath. They flush out toxins from the body and therefore can actually help repair and relax muscle tissue. Try to wash for at least 20 minutes. If using a hot shower you can also try a massaging shower head. I got mine for about fifteen dollars. It’s not the prettiest thing in the world, but it sure feels good.

A more portable method of applying wet heat is a trick we use all the time. We call it rice butt. It’s like the medicated herbal neck wraps that I make or that you can buy at body care stores. Here’s just the poor guy’s version: Grab a big old (but clean!) pipe cleaner. Fill with rice. Tie a knot in the head. Microwave for about 2 minutes. Check that it is not too hot for your skin. If they wrap a dry towel around it. Place your rice ball on any sore muscles and relax in relief! Rice retains some moisture from the air so when it is heated you get moist heat that you can take as far as you go.
