Dehydrating Cheese Slices

My family loves to indulge in cheese slices served with a nice selection of sliced homemade bread. The problem is that when we buy cheese in bulk from our local SAM Club, it’s often too much for us to finish. So we lose a good part of the product. To counter this problem I decided to dehydrate the leftovers for use in other dishes in the future.

After a little thought and effort I realized that the process wasn’t all that different from other drying procedures I’ve done in the past. To begin, I took the cheese and rolled it into very thin individual layers. I quickly realized that the more I grind the cheese the faster it dehydrates. When breaking them, try to get pieces of the same thickness to allow the cheese to melt evenly.

When placing the cheese layers on your dehydrator plates leave enough space between the different pieces so they don’t overlap. If you are dehydrating any kind of soft cheeses like ricotta or perhaps cottage cheese, then cover the tray of your food dehydrator with a piece of plastic wrap. Then spread a thin layer of your soft cheese of choice on the plastic wrap.

While the dehydrating process is going on, turn the cheese slices every hour and melt the fat that may have come from the cheese itself. Continue drying the cheese slices in your food dehydrator until they are completely dry. After the cheese has completely dried, it will show a firm and firm texture while taking on a dark color. First of all, make sure the cheese is completely dry before removing it from your dehydrator.

When the cheese is finished, set it aside for the spell so that it cools properly, then you need to put the dried pieces into a kitchen food processor and grind them to a fine powder. Store cheese powder in an airtight container. I usually put it in a common canning jar with an oxygen product and put the lid on. In a short time the cover will slide in and can be closed properly.

A few nice little tricks you can do with this technique are to make your own pasta cheese flavor. Dehydrate thoroughly and mix together one or if you prefer several types of cheese to create your own personal powdered cheese mix. If you notice that your cheese has gotten wet during storage, it smells bad or looks bad, you should throw it away immediately.

There you have it all in a nutshell, the easy and simple way to dehydrate cheese. Now you have to be the envy of all your surviving friends.
