Child Photography Tips – Capturing That Special Moment in Time

As soon as a woman finds out they are pregnant, the first thing they do is buy a camera to record their baby’s first precious moments. The first time their baby opens their eyes, the first time they smile – those moments are fleeting and last forever, unless they are held and protected forever because they grow up so fast. It is important to document the innocence of youth by capturing it in a photo, to keep memories around happy times.

Professional photography, while good for documenting growth and change, never captures the true child, that playful little soul that lives in your day. You have to do it yourself, immediately when it happens and when it happens. So how do you do it? Well, it’s not as difficult as it seems. You don’t have to be a professional photographer. With a little thought and a camera ready, you too can freeze those special moments for you and your child.

A simple point and shoot digital camera is really all you need. Most cameras made today have automatic focus so you don’t have to fiddle with the settings. And many inexpensive cameras deliver good results, just like their more expensive cousins. Pay attention to the pixel count as this will determine how much you can enlarge your shots, if you choose to do so. The more pixels, the bigger the image and the better the resolution.

Four tips for children’s photography:

1. Taking Time – Children are natural actors and clowns, they approach life as adventure, because that’s what it is for them. They don’t really know what’s around that next corner, so it’s best to stand back and watch them discover. Don’t try to make them proud or give them anything. That’s when they stiffen up, trying to please you. Let them play. Let them experience it. Have your camera ready when the magic happens.

2. Act Like a Professor – Look Later-One of the secrets of photography is that capturing one particular moment can take more than one photo. Sometimes it takes a few shots and when you look at the photos, you don’t see the best one. Digital photography allows you to instantly review your shots, so you can delete or save the good ones. If you do that, however, you might miss the big one because kids don’t stop playing, they move on.

So here’s a suggestion, instead of taking a picture and looking at it, just take it and take it and then look at it. You can always delete the ones you don’t like, but you can never get back the moment you lost when you looked at the photos one by one. If you are always waiting for that magic bullet, it will never come, so just pop the bottle and you will find the magic.

3. Get into your shot – Many people have a tendency to pick up a camera and then immediately step back from their subject. This is not a good idea when you are taking pictures of your children. You don’t want to be over their head to stifle their spontaneity. But you want to get close enough for “them” to be the subject of the shot. In other words, fill the screen with action or the child’s head and shoulders. Lose the background, the law, the equipment of the game. These are only considerations within the framework. Remember that you are taking pictures of your children, not the tree behind them, so turn off your screen. This is called display switching.

4. Throw manually instead of automatically – After looking at your photos and getting familiar with your camera, you may decide that you want to try some hands on manual adjustments instead of relying on your automatic settings. Most digital cameras allow for manual adjustments and come with easy to understand instructions. However, some things about cameras, old or new, are timeless.

For example, if you are trying to capture action, then you need to have a fast shutter speed. Most cameras refer to it as “stop action”. Shutter speeds above 1/250 will freeze the action. The faster the shutter speed the better. You will also have to adjust the aperture setting. Aperture determines how much light is allowed into the camera. Bright sunny days require more light than days with less sunlight. Practice shooting in different lighting conditions to familiarize yourself with how to adjust your equipment.

Don’t be afraid of your equipment. Follow these four baby photography tips and have fun with the camera as well as fun while the kids play. Walk away while they play and you’ll find those special memorable moments, guaranteed.

I hope you found these baby photography tips useful.
