How to Assemble Log Furniture
Many customers or potential customers worry about how much work it will be to assemble their entryway furniture once it is purchased. Hopefully this article will help clarify some of the questions that naturally arise.
While assembly instructions vary between log furniture manufacturers, there are also many similarities. Below is a look that should give you a better idea of what’s involved:
Wardrobes, Boxes, Nightstands and Armoires
Many items associated with rural clothing, such as clothing, chests, nightstands and armor, require very little assembly at all. As a general rule, we remove the doors and handles to avoid damage during shipping, as they are exposed and at risk.
There are holes in the fronts or doors, and screws are included, so all you need to do for these things is to put the handle of the wooden furniture over the holes, put the screws through the hole in the door or the door, and things tighten up .
Amish Low Post Log bed
Most Amish builders like to assemble the headboards on the log beds themselves. Sometimes we ask them to keep the four corner legs for ease of shipping, because the beds can be a little big and making them smaller helps save shipping cost.
All the Amish furniture makers I know use Gorilla Glue, which is a very strong glue. Once they glue the head together, you might even forget to try to take it apart. I know people who have tried to tear them apart, and ended up breaking a piece of the bed instead.
So as a general rule, Amish hats and scarves are fully assembled. At least, the part of the ladder that goes between the two posts is already assembled and glued. If the posts are not attached, you must attach the two horizontal ladder parts of the bed (head and footboard) to the four corner posts.
Amish beds are usually 100% wood.
This means that the mattress and box springs are supported by a wooden frame. As a general rule, two logs run along the side of each bed, under the box springs. These logs are attached at each end in the head and foot. Underneath these two wires are holes for three “cross braces” that go over each other and hold the back of the bed. The middle cross log, on most Amish beds, has a small piece that goes down to the floor to provide a higher degree of support.
So there you have it. If you’ve never seen an Amish bed frame, you might want to take a minute to look at those logs to figure it out. But once you understand, it’s really easy. You’ll want a cotter pin, because you’ll want to drive some 2 ½ inch wood screws near where the log ends, or “ticks” as they’re called, into their designated holes.
This secures the entire frame, and, along with the heavy duty Guerrilla glue previously administered by the Amish, makes it even stronger. A rubber mallet also comes in handy sometimes, to keep a nice piece of wood in place. But you can use a regular hammer if you protect the wood by placing a book or something in between.
Log Post Low Beds with Metal Frames
Assembling low log beds with metal frames is even easier. The ladder sections are usually pre-assembled, so all you have to do is screw the “claws” into the four corner posts and screw them into the wood screws provided to secure them. Most of our beds with metal frames have pre-installed lag bolts on the headboard and footboards. You simply take the metal frame and attach it to the lag bolts on each, then tighten the nuts to secure the bed.
Log beds with metal frames are very sturdy and probably a little easier to assemble 100% easier beds. They also take up a little more room side by side, since they don’t have side rails. If the look of a bed frame bothers you, you can get decorative wooden side rails to attach to the metal bed frame. You can also cover the metal bed frame with clothes, and it won’t show even when the bed is made.
Canopy Log Bed Assembly
Installing a log bed is a bit more difficult than others, simply because of the height and size of the log. This is definitely a two person job – I know some pretty cool mechanical guys who tried to do one themselves and had a really long time. No matter how busy you are, you need someone to hold a post while you work on someone else! Otherwise, it’s really not too difficult.
There are only logs to attach to the top as well as the bottom, and really, it doesn’t hurt to have a few people to help hold the pieces while you tighten the screws.
If I Can Do It…
I’m not known for being mechanical or handy, but I put together a low post bed with a metal frame in half an hour with the help of my 11-year-old son. So if you’re mechanically challenged, it’s really not that bad.
But if it’s a log bed that you’ve always wanted but you’re really overwhelmed by the thought of putting it together, why not make some chocolate chip cookies for one of your furry friends and let them give you a hand. In my humble opinion, however, putting together a log bed isn’t as difficult as some of the other DIY projects I’ve done. So get off your bike and take care of it!
