Growing Up In a Small Country Town.

Growing up in a small town was full of ups and downs. But oh, how I miss her.

The town was small, so small that you knew everyone who lived there. It was great because we had our own little community.

There were no big shops there. Just a little shop where you can buy bread and milk, that is if you were there in the morning, candy, pop and little things like that. There was also an old soda fountain with a bar where you could sit and drink your pop. Something you don’t see very often. In summer you can buy tomatoes, potatoes and corn from the garden. There were some small items for the house but not much. We like to go there with our own money. Then you can buy candy, 2 for a penny. And the glue machine that had spots on some of the customs balls. If you got that, you got a free candy bar for ten cents. Oh penny, I’ll put it in that machine. I thought it was very good. Gum and candy free on that. Remember when you could buy a canteen, and I’m talking about a bigger one than the one you’re buying now, and it was only five cents. A pack of cigarettes was thirty two cents. Well, the shop owners retired. Which, when I was growing up I thought they should have retired years ago. Their children did not want to continue the shop, they wanted to go to the city and live.

We also had a post office in front of a woman’s house. We would go there and look through the glass window to see if there was anything in our box. I get mad when they tell me what’s in my mailbox before they even give it to me. Like I said, everyone knew everyone and knew everyone’s job. If you want to know something, just go to the post office. You found out what was happening in your city without asking.

Then it was our old house. I only went there for first, second and third grade. The building was deteriorating and they decided to take us out of town by bus. The school had only four very large rooms, with a dressing room between the rooms. Two rooms were on the first floor and two rooms were on the upper floor. The first and second class were in a room…The right side of the first class and the left side of the second class. The second room was the third and fourth grade, and the fifth and sixth in one room and the seventh and eighth in the upper floor. Other measures were taken by bus. Each room was heated with a stove. It reminds me of old cowboy movies. They didn’t have a nursery at that time, or it wasn’t thought of at that time, or they didn’t have enough room. It was a great school. We had a break in the morning and afternoon and went home for lunch. Which kids don’t do nowadays. We had one teacher for two classes. So you really got to know her. It was a sad time when they closed the school, and the fear of going to school on the school bus. And he doesn’t go home for lunch anymore.

We had many neighbors who planted large gardens and sold their produce. I remember going down to the boys’ house and buying tomatoes. I will tell him that I need fifty cents worth of tomatoes. I will take home a big bag of tomatoes. What we pay five dollars for today, maybe thirty cents would have happened to us then. I don’t know if everyone got that much or if it was because of their generosity that there were so many in our family and the value of fifty cents was not much. He certainly gave us a lot. Food on the lawn…..I would buy a dozen and he would always throw in some extra. What a boy.

At that time, everyone was looking for everyone. One day no one wants to join. Oh and did I mention getting into trouble. You think no one will see you until you get home. Like the time I was going to a friend’s house and walking in the middle of the train tracks. Wow, I warmed my ass when I got back home. It was a no. At that time, the trains were moving very fast.

And I was caught smoking on the road. Eyes were everywhere, even if you didn’t see them. I remember the time my sister and I were smoking a pack of cigarettes. I had a package then and she didn’t. She wanted some and I wouldn’t give it to her. Well, I’m walking outside and lit a cigarette, bang, lit another, bang, the little boy loaded half my pack with cigarettes. Talk about crazy. But who should I tell? I wasn’t supposed to smoke, I was only 13 or 14 at the time. But sooner or later I did the same with her. I could never find her cigarettes to go. Here, years later, I found a hardback book in a closet, opened it, and in the pages, she cut a hole the size of a pack of cigarettes. What a clever idea. Of course, mom didn’t see it until she was older and on her own.

I could go on and on about living in a small town, but I’m desperate.. If you’ve ever lived in a small country town growing up then you can probably relate, if not then you don’t know what you’re talking about. has forgotten
