Fun Activities To Help Improve Your American Accent

Are you racking your brains right now trying to figure out how to learn an American accent? If English is not your first language and you want to know how you can improve your English speaking, then you have probably tried many different ways to acquire an American accent. Chances are you’ve already enrolled in some Accent Reduction or American Accent programs. If so, then you may be familiar with several different American Accent classes. Of course, the problem with these drugs is that they get old and tired over time which can reduce their overall effectiveness in helping you improve your accent. So, you might be interested in learning some new fun tricks and activities that you can try on your own or with some friends to speed up your American accent learning process.

Show Suggested Discussion

This is a fun activity that allows a large number of participants. The only real catch is that you need a group of at least six people to participate in this fun accent learning activity. Everyone should play their role in this activity. First, someone needs to act as a talk show host. Next, you need to interview at least two people who will act as guests. Finally, you should have a panel of 2-3 judges. It is best if there is a neutral moderator who is not an English language learner who can supervise the activity. The talk show itself can last as long as the host wants. The person acting as host can prepare a set of 2-3 questions for each guest on a topic of general interest. It’s helpful to have a topic for the talk show that everyone can easily talk about to ensure the event flows smoothly. The host should take turns asking each guest questions aimed at sparking a conversation that everyone attending the event can participate in except the judges. Topics can vary from anything from current events to favorite foods and or fan sports. After the show is over, it will be the judges’ turn to speak. Each judge must provide some constructive criticism for each guest on the talk show and assign at least 1 positive point and one negative point for each guest’s speaking style. To make it more competitive, the judges can also award a title such as “best speaker” to the guest who impressed them the most. If you plan to do this, it’s a good idea to base the decision on a pre-established criteria for judging, such as:

Speech clarity: 30%

Content: 30%

Ability to connect with audience: 20%

Fluency in English: 20%

Note that this is just an example and you are really free to use any size that might suit your group.

Puppet Theater

You probably had some fun with this activity as a child, so there’s really no reason why it won’t be any less interesting and educational as an adult trying to pick up the accent of a new or otherwise unfamiliar language. For this activity, at least two people are needed to perform the puppet show and a very large group that can act as an audience. If you are currently enrolled in a pronunciation course, you may want to ask some of your classmates to join in on this activity. If your teacher allows it, you can make it a class activity and do a puppet show in groups. As for the materials for this particular activity, all you really need are some flowers and maybe a table that you can use as a stage to host your show. Dolls can be anything from paper bags to old socks. You can make your puppet as elaborate or as simple as you want – after all, the real purpose of the activity is to speak English and not to show off your puppets. As for the script for the puppet show, you should try to have an open-ended script that allows for lots of random conversations. If you think you can do a puppet show, try having a puppet tell a story for at least 1 minute, after which the person holding the next puppet must continue the story from where the first one left off. . You can also use a prepared script, but it’s a much better practice if you really think about what you’re going to say on the spot. Making it a puppet show also helps you lose your inhibitions because it’s just your puppet and not you who’s really getting the limelight.

Of course, these activities alone won’t really make you proficient in an American accent overnight, but they can be a huge help if you take an Accent Reduction course.
