Is It Vitally Important To Know The Place of the Prophet and Prophetic Ministry Today?
Read it carefully and gratefully – and experience what is true.
Having looked briefly at the Prophets in this tour of the Holy Scriptures, let us stop and focus on the person of the prophet and the place of the “Ministry of the Prophet”.
There is such a great need for the Ministry of Prophecy – people hear from God and speak what God wants them to say – and we hear a lot about the Ministry of Prophethood today – but most of what we hear as ‘Prophecy’ is no more than ‘wishful thinking’. ‘ – or people who want to congratulate you with some encouragement.
An important difference between Old Testament and New Testament prophecy is that in the New Testament people judge whether the Word is from God or not.
When a prophet speaks, you have a choice – 1 – Convert – or 2 – Kill the Prophet.
Luke Chapter 11 verse 52. A prophet is a key to what God does – and what God does is revealed to the prophets.
Sometimes it will be for immediate sharing – other times, the prophet may be silent on that word, for weeks or months.
There is a need for a clear voice – and the prophet is considered to be the voice or trumpet of God.
Now there may be false prophets – the teller at the bank can sense a false “five” without looking at it. He doesn’t even have to look – all he has to say is – “Excuse me sir”. He was trained that way. And you don’t walk in with a coin and a kid has a £5 note on it – you make it as real as you can make it.
Luke Chapter 7 verse 14. It is a prophetic word. In a miracle – different gifts of the Holy Spirit can work at the same time.
Verse 16. Jesus is described as a ‘great prophet’.
These are real people in this Book – Jesus – Peter – Paul – Moses – Isaiah – Jeremiah – and others. Every time they hit their pants on one leg.
Verse 39. Religious people do not know prophets.
Verse 40. This is called confrontation.
Jesus continues to teach – verse 45 – do not forget what God is doing. It is very easy to be doctrinally correct, and forget what the living God is doing.
Verse 37. The alabaster box was part of the prostitute’s equipment.
A prophet can penetrate and shock the entire religious world.
Luke 24 verse 19. Jesus – A prophet with words and actions.
Being a prophet – being a prophet, is NOT a 9 to 5 job – it involves his whole life. God touches everything – work – car – home – finances – everything.
A prophet is a preacher – a mouthpiece – one who gives a mouth to God – His Words in your mouth. It almost goes to your brain – sometimes inevitably – or you
will never say the words.
Therefore, the prophet must be sure that God has given him the Word.
Don’t say, “The Lord told me” – when He didn’t!
I have very few people who have heard God’s voice – and accepted God’s word to speak prophetically.
Larry Christenson explains to a group of us at a Leadership Conference in Germany – “I decided to go to the Conference in Kenya. Others may say, ‘God led me to go to that Conference in Kenya’.” Now of course, both may be true – but there needs to be a balance.
In prophesying – when prophesying – when the Lord stops speaking, you have to do two people. How many times has there been a Word of Prophecy – and when the Word of God is finished, the prophet continues to speak.
When God chooses a prophet – when He chooses a prophetic ministry – He chooses someone in the Body of Christ – and often that person is very reluctant.
He is either a prophet or a deceiver. The church judges.
God calls man – gives the gift of a prophet to the body of Christ – and the body recognizes him.
In ‘Didakh’ – when a prophet comes to you – let him stay for two or three days – do not let him speak – then prophesy. It took them two or three days to notice.
This is what we need to do sometimes, in this whole area of prophetic ministry.
The prophet cannot rise – idolatry – injustice – formality – false weights.
Moses and the golden calf – Moses the prophet – he was concerned about the moral character of God – and the character of God’s people.
Jeremiah Chapter 1 – four negatives and two positives – and Jeremiah wanted to run a mile. I can’t do it – don’t ask me to do it LORD!!
I was there – I know the truth about it – you?
God had left the Church that day – and the priests did not know – Jeremiah
Chapter 2 verse 8. They did not miss Him. Jeremiah is on a mission to destroy.
A prophet is a visionary – he sees something – they can see what is coming.
Jeremiah and the underwear – Chapter 13 – very dramatic – we’d better pull back the cute word. This thing is complicated by God – but I have to bear it. Chapter 20.
The prophets were sometimes given heavy burdens.
In the New Testament, prophecy is always encouragement – encouragement – and consolation. I Corinthians Chapter 14 verses 1 to 5.
Speaking in Tongues and Interpretations have Prophetic value.
Verse 27. (If he were writing about our present situation, it might be something like this – at least one of you should.)
Verse 29. A prophet is given. If God speaks, don’t you think the least we can do is stop and think about what He said – its significance – and what it might involve.
It is not for guidance – but for approval – or understanding.
Building up the Church is important – building up yourself is just as important but it is done in a different way.
Everything is done for the building of the Church – for the building of the Church. And in the case of prophecy – the Church judges! That is NOT the same as being critical – or having a sneaking suspicion.
The first prophetic word I was aware of was in November 1969 at a Fountain Trust Conference in Yorkshire – “I have a work for you to do, and in my name you will do it”. It was for my brother and friend, Jim Kincaid, when he was being prayed for, before moving from Scotland to South Africa – and he and his wife Val, went and worked!
Verse 37. Prophets must be aware of Control – Command – Regulation. Burns an evil spirit.
Prophet GOD – JESUS - Bible reminds people.
Do you want the Definition of Prophecy? “The law given by the Holy Spirit to a believer that the words come from God and not from the believer’s own wisdom, understanding and education. Some people see written words – or see visions – or just begin to speak.”
Verse 39. Seek – desire – and be ready to take risks.
“Almighty God – loving Father – teach us – guide us – use us – in this dark and painful world – where there is such pain and suffering. Raise up people to speak and preach and Your Immutable Holy Word teach. Jesus, you are anointed. called, with love and grace and strength and courage – and sensitivity and tenderness, when these are needed. Amen.”
