You Can’t Put an Old Head on Young Shoulders

My grandmother often told me this. She was such a smart woman, born before her time. I would love to have the opportunity to sit down and talk with her at the age I am today. He is the one behind me and a lot of my work and writing. Her wisdom often guides me in the other direction today. Her words from my childhood are still echoing in my head.

‘You can’t put an old head on young shoulders’ is an old Gaelic saying (quote) and it’s not surprising that many of its words have their origins there. Many of these old sayings give us some idea of how these people thought about such things as the qualities of generosity and humility and friendship with others. On the other hand, compliments and insults were and still are at best overlooked. In addition, he had a great understanding of human weaknesses and mistakes. And that is still true in Gaelic culture today.

Wisdom is a gift of time and experience. The older I get, the more I see and understand how impossible it is to expect someone to have insight before their time or age. Growth as we get older comes as a result of the experiences we have and without these we are stuck where we are.

There are people I know today, who are adults, who have not yet matured in their emotional health. I know people who were emotionally traumatized by things that happened in their lives and couldn’t get over them, thus becoming victims of their past.

And then sometimes we see or hear of people who have ‘old heads on young shoulders’ (similar to the phrase ‘wise beyond their years’) and we are amazed at the wisdom that comes from such a short life experience. Sometimes children come up with amazing words or information, which makes one wonder where it came from because they had no experience of such depth. They act older and wiser, and sometimes have a much older vibe than their peer group, which corresponds to their growth in time.

We often hear that ‘if we knew when we were young, what we know now, how different our lives would be.’ I wonder. If we had known, our lives would have been different and our lessons would not have been the same. We have come into this life to learn certain things that depend on the type of student we are. Some of us are slower than others to get the message and some get it quickly.

I believe that depending on the emotions that are strongest in us, we learn our lessons by using what is available to us. I am an experiential learner myself, which means I have to do it, feel it and understand it in order to learn the lesson or skill. I’m not a listener so I don’t expect to learn this way.

The three primary styles that have been talked about for years are Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic (hands and movement-oriented). Since the digital age has been born, we now see that there is a fourth sensory style of digital learning that brings us into another form of understanding of our younger age groups called Digital Auditory.

Do you understand the power of your emotions? This can be very life changing for people to understand if this is a new concept. We need to communicate and understand that each person communicates from their own emotional style, which means that unless we know something about the style we can misinterpret people and what they want or need. The five main senses we are talking about are seeing, hearing, feeling, touching, smelling and tasting. Intuition comes as a sixth sense.

As adults we don’t necessarily expect a young person to match the wisdom or maturity of older people, although sometimes we are surprised by today’s young people who sometimes think and speak well beyond their years.

We often hear someone refer to someone as an ‘old soul’ who seems older and wiser than their age group. It is believed by many that some children are unusually mature because they have somehow retained their maturity learned from previous lives.

We can reverse the saying ‘young head on old shoulders’, which means that a person is still mentally intelligent despite being older in years. Sometimes we say that someone who is older is ‘young at heart’ meaning that they have the ability to see things from a younger perspective and live a life like a younger age group.

So, if you are lucky enough to be with a teenager who has the quality of someone much older, your understanding of life can be very refreshing as they see things from their young perspective/ look great The same goes for someone who is of mature age but indicates that they prefer to be with people of a younger age group who tend to encourage them and their ideas to keep themselves informed, mentally active and alive.
