Why Childhood Is Better the Second Time Around

This week Our Lady of Parsonage and Yours Truly had the privilege of attending our youngest granddaughter’s second birthday party. I wanted to go to her third birthday party but she wasn’t ready yet. So, I will wait another year.

On the way home we sat in silence and thought about the party we had just attended. It just seems impossible that we have eight grandchildren. I broke the silence on this line with a small comment. “I’m just not old enough to be a grandfather to eight grandchildren. I don’t feel old enough to be a grandfather.”

From the other passenger in the car, there was a very sarcastic laugh, if I do say so myself.

“What’s mean?” I replied.

“Well,” she said slowly as if she was trying to gather her thoughts and use the right words, “trust me, put all feelings aside, you’re old enough.”

I didn’t know exactly what she meant by this, and I was afraid she would tell me if I asked. I quickly changed the subject and said, “Wouldn’t Jordin look good with birthday cake on her face?”

He smiled.

Later, I thought I was talking to myself, but apparently, I said it loud enough for my wife to hear. “I wonder what it’s like to be two years old?”

“Get ready,” my wife said with a smile in her voice, “you’re ready to enter your second childhood.”

At the time, I was more offended by the comment, but on second thought, I see nothing wrong with it. After all, what’s wrong with enjoying childhood a second time?

I really don’t think one can enjoy childhood for the first time. There are many things to intervene.

First of all, parents are constantly telling you what to do or not to do. They told you when to go to bed. Telling you what time to get up in the morning. Told you when to eat. Told you what to eat. They say… They say… They say…

How in the world can anyone enjoy life when people are always telling them what to do? The problem is, when a person is two years old, they have absolutely no power over their dominant parents. The only thing a two-year-old can do to get a hold of his parents is to wait until they’re in the supermarket with lots of people around him and then throw a frustrated tantrum.

Here is the advantage of entering for the second time in childhood. There is no one around to tell you what to do or what not to do. At least in this respect you are on your own. Of course, in your second childhood it is impossible to get away with disappointment in a general supermarket.

The advantage of having a second child is that you have all that experience behind you to use to your advantage that a two-year-old would not be able to. This in itself involves many sins.

– What is your husband? Someone might ask my wife.

“Oh,” he replies mechanically, “he’s in his second childhood.”

“I understand, my husband is there too.”

And all is right with the world.

In man’s first childhood, he is very limited in his vision. He doesn’t know what’s missing. But in his second childhood, he has the advantage of knowing this and using it for his personal benefit.

For example, when the parents of a two-year-old child take him out to a restaurant, he is completely at the mercy of the parents.

“Eat your vegetables,” parents urge, then you can eat candy.

At this point, the two-year-old cannot do anything. After all, the one who pays the bill should say who does what.

Now, as I move into my second childhood, I have the benefit of knowing that all the ills associated with eating vegetables are just that… And because I pay, I can eat wild whenever I want. Actually, I’ll start with sweet and end with sweet. And while I’m on the subject, if I don’t want to order vegetables, I won’t order vegetables.

Many times when my wife and I go out to a restaurant she will order a well balanced meal while I order dessert.

“You know vegetables are good for you?” my wife will insist.

“I don’t know anything like that,” I reply.

A two-year-old child believes when his parents tell him that vegetables are good, especially green vegetables. But someone like me, who is enjoying a second chance at childhood, knows that this is not entirely true. And, it’s not true that I have to clean my plate before I eat my dessert.

As a mature man enjoying his second childhood, I don’t have to believe everything people tell me. If the dessert didn’t taste good to me, why in the world did it taste so good to me?

I have good scriptural evidence that God is on my side here. In the Psalms, I read about God: “He who feeds your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like that of an eagle” (Psalm 103:5).

God has been on my mind for the longest time.
