Uncommon Home Remedies
Have you seen that movie, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”? The Greek Father has a hilarious urge to cure every human ailment with a spray of Windex! That’s right, window cleaning. I’ve never heard of using Windex for anything other than cleaning windows, but if it does work, I’m guessing it’s because of the alcohol in it that did the trick since alcohol is an antiseptic.
Now, don’t go spilling Windex on yourself, especially not indoors! I don’t want you to wind up in the emergency room and tell the staff there that you tried Windex for your sore throat. They may put you in a more secure wing of the hospital than you expected.
As silly a scenario as that sounds, as long as there are cuts, bruises, insect bites, fungal nails, bad breath, and a host of other minor human ailments, there are some off-the-wall remedies for them.
So, in a departure from my usual advice to you, I would like to share some of these unknown home remedies with you here so that you can find work for you.
Nail kit: How about Vick’s Vaporub? Yes, it has been reported that Vick’s Vaporuba is the old fashioned way to get rid of toenail fungus. After thoroughly cleaning your feet and the affected nail(s), apply some Vicks Vaporub to your nail(s). Do this every day for 2 weeks and watch the progress. The menthol in Vicks suffocates and kills the fungus.
Wars: Are there wars? Is there a tape? Yes, tape. It really works to remove them. In a study published in the Archives of Adolescent Medicine, the tube removed 85% of them, compared to 60% with the freezing method. Cut a small piece of tape, place it on the abdomen, remove it within 3 days and use a pumice stone or pumice stone to remove dead skin. Repeat if necessary.
Toothache: Unless you can get to your dentist, soak a cotton ball, or Q-tip, in vanilla extract and apply directly to the tooth for immediate pain relief. Rinsing your mouth with some hydrogen peroxide in water (swallow!) will kill the bacteria in the infected tooth tissue.
Hiccup: Swallow 1 teaspoon of simple table sugar to relieve nausea quickly.
Breathe: Wash your feet with vodka or gin. Alcohol kills bacteria and also dehydrates the skin which allows the fungus to grow.
Joint pain: Washing ginger with grapes is said to relieve arthritis pain. 2 cups of golden berries, 1 cup of gin made from juniper berries. Place grapes in a glass bowl; pour life over them and cover them completely. Let it soak for 10 days at room temperature. Eat 10 ripe grapes a day.
Tension headache: When you are stressed, you tend to clench your jaw and create a lot of tension in your temporal muscles. This can cause a headache. Stick a pencil between your back teeth but don’t move it. This forces the jaw muscle to relax and reduce the headache.
Leg pain/leg cramps: Take a 16 oz soda bottle and fill it with water and freeze it. Once frozen, place the ice pack on the bottom of your sore feet, one at a time, and rub the pack back and forth under it. This helps to cool the heel inflammation and relaxes the leg muscles.
Dry and hard calluses: Take some brown salt, or a pinch of sea salt; Add a tablespoon or two of olive oil. Apply the mixture to the dry calloused area of your foot. Salt exfoliates and exfoliates dry skin, and olive oil adds moisture to the area, making it soft and supple.
Flowers under the eyes: We all wake up in the morning with puffy bags under our eyes because we didn’t get enough sleep the night before. The home remedy that models and actresses use to get rid of them is to apply Preparation H hemorrhoid cream to the under eye area. The same ingredients that reduce hemorrhoid swelling also reduce bags under the eyes.
Urinary tract infections: If you are prone to frequent urinary tract infections, try drinking 8 oz of cranberry juice with 1/4 tsp of baking soda. Reduces bacteria and alkalizes urine. If infections persist, see a doctor.
Blisters: Stop the pain by drying them quickly with oral Listerine. Apply to the affected areas 3 times a day with a cotton ball until dry.
Sore throat: My grandmother never lets us forget this old world remedy – 1 teaspoon of salt in a cup of hot water. Gewridan. Repeat several times a day until the sore throat is gone. The salt dries out and kills the bacteria in the back of your throat that is causing it.
Excessive sweating of the arm: Apple cider vinegar, or lime juice, is applied to clean arms before bed, and allowed to air dry, then washed off in the morning. Both are acidic agents and may balance the acid/alkaline environment of the gut.
Natural toothbrush: Forgot your toothbrush? Eat an apple, preferably a green Granny Smith variety that is full of malic acid. Not only will the apple clean the debris from your teeth, the malic acid also helps to get rid of the stains.
Bee occupations: Summer is not far and so are the mosquito bites! If you hate them as much as I do, get yourself a glass bottle and dab it with cotton balls to get the itch out of them. A paste of salt and water placed on the coconut will do the same. Both dry out the fluid that swells around the rash that causes itching.
Well, there you have it, some unknown home remedies for some everyday ailments. All of these are proven to work anecdotally not only by people who have used them, but also by researchers who have studied specific home remedies. Try one or more. However, if you find that your condition does not go away, consult your doctor.
