The Greatest Love and Self-image

There were three words for “Love” in the Greek language. First was “eros”, from which we get “erotic”. This, of course, was a purely selfish love. Next was “Phileo” (Philadelphia), or “brotherly love”. This is the love of one family member for another. But the Bible added a new one: “Agape is a love of giving, completely selfless.”

From both an illustrative and a practical point of view, let me quote the following note from Mary Ellen Grisham, publisher of “The Eternal Link”:

After counseling young couples for years, a minister I know suggested that “love is what you make it.” Young couples often try to reconcile differences in romantic relationships and the realities of everyday life… Especially young women, suffering the stress of many new responsibilities, fear that their feelings for their husbands were not always the same. delicate and romantic as it was during dating. Even with a foundation of sincere love, busy schedules and financial needs have ruined the marriage. With the advice that “love is what you do,” women could focus less on romantic feelings and more on positive actions—showing their love in practical and effective ways. The active elements of goodwill and trust helped the couple maintain the “zip and spice” of a balanced relationship within the household – what couples used to call the “give and take”.

That self-sacrificing love called agape that causes each of us to focus on the needs of others without giving back to ourselves is the high ideal of Christian love. While it takes all kinds of love and affection to make a good home and marriage, the common element of “whatever you do” runs through all the forms that love takes. From romantic love to brotherly and familial love, external evidence shows in “what you do.”

This last Greek word, agape, is the word used to describe God’s love for us. As the song “God’s Love” says:

O love of God, how rich, how pure,

How immeasurable and strong

It will last forever

The song of saints and angels

And the oceans were filled with ink

And the heavens are made of parchment

And every blade of grass a bush

And everyone is a scribe by trade

To write love

of God above

It will dry up the ocean

Not even a book can cover the whole thing

Even if it is stretched from sky to sky.

We are of great value both because of our creation and because of the price of our salvation. There is an old story that illustrates this perfectly.

A young boy built a beautiful toy boat and took it to the lake to sail, but a gust of wind blew the boat into the lake. The ship was lost. A few weeks later, the boy saw his ship in the window of a toy store. When he asked for his boat, the shop owner said: “I own the boat now. You can buy it again if you want.”

The boy sold everything he had to buy back his boat. After paying the shop owner, the boy took his boat to his heart and said: “Little boat, you are twice mine, I made you, now I brought you.” Like that little boat, we are twice the Lord’s – He created us, and Christ redeemed us by paying the penalty for our sin with His blood. It is my heart’s desire that you know how great God’s love is for you, and that you will receive His unspeakable gift by asking Him to be your Savior and Lord.

The Holy Bible says in Romans 5:8: “God demonstrated his love for us when, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” And in John 3:16, Jesus says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” This is the life that begins here and now, and what He described in John chapter 10 as “the abundant life.” When we accept God’s great gift of salvation through His Son, He accepts us and we become His beloved children (John 1:12). He must do something for his old image. Imagine being a son of the Most High God. And here the road to real success begins. But that doesn’t mean that our self-image is automatically correct or that non-Christians can’t have a decent self-image. Other steps in developing the right custom image include:

2) Understand the source of your self-image The image you have today is because of past experiences. Past experiences have not made you the way you are, but they have made you believe that you are the way you are and that is the belief that you really did. (By age 14 most of us have a well developed sense of inferiority.

3) Make sure your profile picture can be changed. You are not a prisoner.

4) Decide what type you want to be and write it down. Here are 3 ways to decide:

a) Observe and follow the characteristics of people you admire. Watch for features that don’t appeal to you and avoid them.

b) Look at the virtues of great people of the past and make those qualities a part of your life.

c) Study the life of Jesus. How did he react in certain situations? What was His position?

5) Write a description of the type of person you want to be in the current positive statements.

6) Invest time every day with the person you want to be. (Read about the explanation.)a

7) Be patient with yourself. (You didn’t become like yourself overnight.)

By following these 7 steps we should begin to see a steady improvement in our self image.
