The Popularity of Podcasting
What is podcasting?
The process of using the internet to make public broadcast recordings available for download on a computer or mobile device is known as Podcasting.
A podcast is a collection of serialized digital audio clips in conversational terms that a user can access on a desktop device for easy listening. A simple and efficient way for many podcast outlets to manage their personal consumption and playback database supported by streaming apps and podcast networks.
The podcast medium has become popular 15 years after Apple first offered 3,000+ songs on iTunes. According to reports, millions of Americans subscribe to podcasts every week, up from 19 million in 2013. The range of options podcast listeners have today is one of the reasons for the rise. With over 54 million podcast episodes widely accessible worldwide, there are now over 1,000,000 successful podcasts. Due to the low cost of entry, 192,000 new podcasts were released in the first ten months of 2020. Various major media companies have recently entered the industry to acknowledge the success of podcasting. Joe Rogan just signed a huge, multi-million dollar contract because of his podcast!
The Growth of Podcasting in the Last Five Years
For the past five years, I’ve attended the Podcast Movement Conference, the largest annual podcasting event, and I’ve seen the conference expand along with the industry, reaching 5,000 attendees in 2020. The podcast industry is going to grow exponentially this year!
Podcasts are simply a collection of audio files made available digitally for other people to listen to at their own convenience. Most podcasts are structured like a TV or radio program, with multiple “seasons” and episodes focusing on different topics with special guests. Listeners can subscribe to specific podcasts, download and listen to new episodes whenever it’s convenient for them.
While podcasts have been around for almost 20 years, think back to 2004 when Apple’s iPod minis were all the rage, and the iTunes Music Store had just gone global. In the last few years there has been an increase in hearing that has attracted a lot of attention from business owners, celebrities, advertisers and consumers.
Why People Are Listening to Podcasts More Than Ever Before
Let’s take a closer look at six reasons why more and more people are listening to podcasts:
1. It doesn’t take much to get started.
One of the things that makes podcasts so attractive to companies, especially companies with smaller or limited budgets, is the affordability of getting started. These companies do not require a huge investment for their podcast. The same applies to individuals. You can probably use the tools you already have (computer, computer camera and microphone) to get started! For your first few episodes, something as simple as recording on a smartphone or tablet will work well.
You don’t have to write down what you want to say, because podcasts are also very conversational. To help you stay on track, you can create an outline ahead of time, but most of the discussion will be well written. This is especially true if you have a co-host or are doing interviews.
2. Podcasts are also perfect for storytelling
As a small business owner, your stories are what will help you attract people to listen to your podcast and get them involved in your business. Your podcast can inspire them to choose your company over the competition. Hopefully, you’re always looking for ways to share amazing stories, generate interest, send people to your website or forum, engage on social media, and sign up to receive newsletters and email updates about your business or services.
Podcasts allow you to use more of the power of communication as an audio-based medium than just written words. Instead of reading the words and understanding (or misinterpreting) them on your own, your listeners will hear your stories straight from the source. Your voice, your excitement, your seriousness – all of it – comes through in the sound they hear!
3. Podcasting is extremely easy to do.
Podcasts offer listeners a multi-lingual gift than blog posts or videos, which require a whole person’s attention.
Therefore, through their phones, laptops, or other mobile devices, most people who listen to podcasts will do so while doing other things. They can listen to podcasts while they are getting ready for work in the morning, on their commute to work, or preparing dinner.
Video, on the other hand, requires people to focus on the video and not on other things. This is one of the main advantages of podcasting!
Podcast listeners can easily integrate listening time into their daily schedules, so statistics reveal that six or more podcasts a week are consumed by one in five weekly podcast users.
The Future of Podcasting Looks Bright
I’m excited to see where podcasting will go. Personally, as a podcaster, I’m really encouraged by what I’m seeing right now. As Apple continues to invest heavily in podcasting, I think there will be many more big names entering the podcasting sphere of influence. Despite the big names entering this market, you and I have an equal opportunity to create our own program and see it become something big at the same time.
