Change Your PS4’s Hard Drive

The PlayStation 4 launched with a 500 gigabyte drive. How lovely! They think 500 gigabytes of data is enough! Hey, Sony! This is not 2008. 500 gigs will never happen. There are no mandatory installations while you are playing. Not when your games are 40 to 50 gigs a piece. You make us data exchange. That’s fine with smartphones, where apps can be deleted and reinstalled in 30 seconds. Not good when your games are absolutely massive, and games can take HOURS to install. Why don’t you send at least a terabyte? It’s relaxing! You might as well shut up, Microsoft. You shipped with the same size hard drive! Not only that, but at least Sony ships with your average laptop hard drive. You must purchase a proprietary driver with your console. So, let me say this as professionally as I can: Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

However, there is a simple solution to this problem. That is to replace only the hard drive itself. Calm down, don’t cry. Oh god, you’re crying. It’s not that hard. It’s really very simple. Don’t you cry anymore? OK, good. Please keep calm, it was stressful for both of us. Well, now you’re crying again. Let’s walk alone…

NOTE: I don’t think this will void your warranty, however, it is in your best interest to contact Sony to confirm. I am in no way responsible for any damage or voided warranties that may occur as a result of replacing the hard drive. Please proceed with caution!

The first step is to gather the materials! So first you’ll need a new hard drive. I used a Seagate one terabyte hybrid drive. Make sure the drive is a 2.5 inch drive, otherwise it won’t fit in the PS4. You can also use a solid state drive. That being said, I don’t think you’ll get much speed out of it. Plus solid state storage is traditionally much more expensive than a traditional platter hard drive. Or you can get a traditional hard drive with a ton of storage. The reason I went with a hybrid drive is that you get most of the benefits of a solid state drive combined with the cheap mass storage of a traditional platter based hard drive.

You will also need a working computer. Ugh, I know. I ask a lot of you. Using that computer, go to the Sony website. Find the latest firmware. Make sure your firmware is 3.15 as of the date this article was published. You will also need a one gigabyte thumb drive to put the downloaded firmware on, and also if you plan to back up your save and game data. Make sure it is formatted with FAT32. Right click on the flash drive, and click format and make sure FAT32 is selected. You will need a PS4 controller and a USB cable. Finally, get a handy stick!

If you plan to back up the save, insert the USB drive into the PS4, go to the settings menu. Find the “Manage Application Saved Data” menu under the settings menu. Go back and forth, and follow the on-screen instructions.

Then let’s get down and dirty and start disassembling the PS4. The first thing you need to do is make sure the PS4 is disconnected. Disconnect from the wall, just in case. Then, all you have to do is remove the shiny plastic piece from the PlayStation. It will require a little force, so don’t be afraid to use some. It should be easy to handle. You should see the hard drive inside its cage. There will be a very large pad with square, circle, x and triangle PlayStation icons on it. Remove that screw with your Phillips head driver. Remove the cage from the PS4. Good job so far!

Now inspect the hard drive cage, pay attention to the orientation of the hard drive, and locate the four screws that secure the hard drive to the cage. Remove your old hard drive. Make sure the rubber parts stay in place. Place the new hard disk in the same position as the old one and secure it in place with the 4 screws you just removed. With the hard drive reattached, insert the caddy into the PS4’s internal cage. Go ahead and slide the black plastic piece onto the PlayStation 4 and hold it back.

So first thing’s first, let’s prepare our new thumb drive! Connect your thumb drive to your computer. Find your thumb drive on your computer. It can be found under the “This PC” folder if you are on Windows 8 or higher or “My Computer” if you are on Windows 7 or lower. Once you do that, create a folder called “PS4” on the thumb drive and then within that folder create another folder called “UPDATE”, and when you do that put the PS4UPDATE.PUP file into that folder. Once you’ve done that, safely remove your thumb drive and insert it into the PlayStation.

Go to number 7

Plug the PS4 back into the wall. Plug your PS4 controller into the console. Find the power button on the front of the console and hold it for about 7-10 seconds. Using the controller go to “Restart PS4 (Reset System Software).” Now, let the PS4 do its thing, and it should be fine. Once it does, it should land you on the initial setup screen, where you can re-enter all your account information, enter the date and time again, and connect to the internet.

The last thing you need to do is go back to the settings menu and go back to where you backed up all your records. Now you need to reverse and restore the applications you backed up. Once you’ve done that, go back to the PlayStation store and download all your games again. Your PS4 should now be in the same state as when you started.

That’s it! Congratulations! You have a storage solution from this decade! I am proud of you. God, you’re crying again. Yes, I know this is a big deal. You are big now! I’ll just go…
