PlayStation Move Review
Remember when the Wii came out. Sony broke it down saying it was a stupid thing to wave a remote at a TV. But the white remote has sold millions and now Sony has come up with an answer and it’s called the PlayStation Move. A black torch controller on top of a disco ball. It came out on September 15, 2010 and I checked it out.
Most consumers will probably walk into stores just to find a full price of Move controllers and accessories. And frankly I think most people don’t even know what they need to buy to get the full experience. Well for those people, including myself, Sony released a starter pack with PS eye (requires a controller to scan), a motion controller and a demo disc with only the content in the PS store as well.
I opened the box and installed the camera. Conveniently it doubles as a headphone, cool! And the camera allows for fun things like video chat or creating photos for your game avatar.
The Move controller was similarly easy to set up. There’s a USB port on the bottom, for connecting and charging the controller, and the buttons are perfectly placed near the glowing ball. There are two buttons for the new PlayStation, the movement button and the trigger button. The movement button is mostly used for selecting objects or calibrating the controller, while the T button is perfect for shooting or releasing objects in the game.
The starter pack is a great move by Sony to get people started. And it is also very competitively priced at €59.99. To put this into perspective, the cost of a Wii mote 40 (without camera and disc) and Microsoft Kinect will ship for a hefty €149.99! But I would have liked to see an alternative starter pack with a navigation controller and charging dock included. They could have called it the “total package” or something.
The demo disc includes Sony’s sports game with lots of mini-games, and includes some advanced indie action titles and some triple demos like Heavy Rain and Tiger Woods 11. God, my swing is bad!
Every game starts with a quick calibration session. It’s a simple development that’s often as simple as pointing the mouse at the PS eye and pressing a button. However I wonder why calibration is needed every time.
From the few games I was able to play I was very impressed with the accuracy and responsiveness of the controller. The sports title was a lot of fun. I have a Frisbee game and it perfectly picks up whether I throw backwards or forwards, it also recorded my throwing speed and release time.
The same applies to the game of table tennis. You can even spin 360 with the racket by turning the controller in your hand. A nice party trick!
The PlayStation Eye camera introduces another interactive element. This small device is compatible with Singstar and TV stars. The last one I played a demo of. In the game you can create a profile using your face. By creating a “neutral face”, “smiling face” and “angry face” you create your own virtual mini game that reacts to what is happening in the game. It’s really fun and is now #1 on my Christmas dinner party list.
So the controller is great, as is the camera and all for a competitive price. One might ask if this product is perfect. Well, the answer should be no, it isn’t. First of all, the starting package alone is not enough to keep you going. Most games require two motion controllers or a navigation controller to make it worthwhile. Add the costs of this, and a docking station, and you’re easily spending €150+ on a set of controllers and accessories.
And the PlayStation’s eyepiece is pretty bad at recording in low light. Use anything other than natural light and the camera will freeze on the ISO number resulting in noise throughout the image. It’s not fun when video chatting with grandma or playing games that project virtual toys in your living room.
The PlayStation Move is an amazing controller. It’s very real and really breaks down that wall between you and the games you play. Fun for the whole family. With the eye-catching functionality of the PlayStation, one can’t go wrong with Sony’s latest creation. Just be prepared to spend a lot of money on accessories to get the full experience.
