Cuffs Are Showing – It’s a Fact

I had a bit of a fashion crisis this week. I was watching the TV show Ugly Betty. I know, I know – kind of a girly show, but it’s one of those shows that so many people watch that it’s good to have a little knowledge about. So, if someone asks if Betty is with Henry or Gio is the Sandwich Guy or Matt is the new YETI guy, I don’t say, why one of them will with it at all? He looks like someone’s dad. Saying this would make me politically incorrect. First words Bubbe from YETI makes me seem like a sweet guy with a broad cultural base.

So, yes – I was watching Ugly Betty. This episode, when I watched it this week, may actually be from a few weeks ago. I like to save them on my DVR and wait until I can watch them all together. For those who don’t watch the show, it’s about Betty, who has been wearing rings for the past eighteen seasons and wearing a lot of outrageous prints, all mixed together and not worrying about what prints to wear for the evening. or be reserved for the day. summer or winter, dress or sofa. He takes a job at Meade Publishing – which may or may not be the actual name of the company – at their flagship magazine. Awa. Awa apparently as Vogue. There are a number of completely predictable, yet genuinely enjoyable characters, including Betty’s boss, Daniel Meade, a trust fund gambler who slowly transforms into a Real Man under Betty’s moral and noble influence.

It was Daniel’s friend who gave it to me crisis de nerfs on fashion. You see, I’m all about taking traditional menswear and giving it a modern twist and a bit of personalization. In other words, I keep up, or try to keep up, with what’s happening in fashion today—except for Aladdin pants, short jackets, short Bermuda shorts, and other timeless fads that are au courant.

In this episode, Daniel flies into the office in a tizzy — yes, a tizzy — because his shirt cuffs are coming off the sleeves of his jacket. Apparently, he was at the Marc Jacobs preview and the shoes were going out. So Daniel came to the conclusion that his shirts were too out of style and that he needed to remove 1/8 inch from all of them.

And this stopped me. Since fashion is so arbitrary, how does a man keep up?

The traditional school of thought is that your cuffs should protrude about half an inch from the sleeves of your jacket. I would say in the words of Daniel Meade that this is the definition peeking. This gives your arms some balance, but it also means that the sleeves of your shirt are long enough to comfortably wrap around your shoulder without them falling to your shoulder. Long sleeves are never good for men!

Peeking gives you the opportunity to show off your really cool watch (which means wristwatch) while ditching your cuffs (for more examples of this, please refer to Andrew Dice Clay Pretty in Pink – this is not a great film for art, but it has examples of very good drawing). It also gives you the perfect outlet for a super cute pair of clothes.

When you think about it, there aren’t that many places where men can show off fine jewelry unless you’re an Italian from New Jersey or an Iranian Ayatollah. In that case, there are many thick chains and large pendants de rigueur (I look a lot French today). To run the mill, if you went to such a school, you have a place for a class ring (if you’re over 20 class rings should be for college only; if you have a class ring on post-20s and early HS comes after the school name, put it in a box full of emotional things and focus on new achievements). Or, you may have a wedding ring or engagement ring. Or even a signal bell.

Tie tacks are no longer in fashion. Nixte. If you’re a minister and want to cross-train, or you’re eight years old and don’t need your clip to get in your soup, go for it. Plus, wearing a tie totally gives you a Dilbert moment. Neck braces just show the world that you’ve been lying about your neck size for years and can’t afford a shirt that fits.

Spats? No jewelry. Belt buckles? Only in Texas.

So – the only place to look for sparkle and shine is ginger! Choose some with enamelled designs – so Faberge! Or simple monograms – the very British Royal Family! Bracelets will give you that bit of beauty you need to adorn your persona – and if they’re eye-catching enough, you’ll stand a chance of being noticed or looked at.
