How to Find Success in Business, No Matter What Business You Are In

After thirty-five years of running my own company, Mid-Hudson Marketing, I have come to understand a few truths about what makes for success in business. Regardless of what business you’re in, if you give customers what they want, customers will be happy. And happy customers keep coming back. They refer other customers to you.

Now, you would think that in a marketing business, a client would come to me to bring him business. But, quite simply, when a client comes to me for marketing services, there is much more to what the client wants than meets the eye. Customers need credentials. Customers need friends. Clients need trusted assistants to do things they can’t do themselves, and do them well. Customers need reliable business partners they can rely on in times of need to provide them with guidance and advice. Consumers need all of these but don’t want to spend too much for it. And customers get these things exactly when they need them, at the exact time they ask for them, without having to wait for their turn. After all, consumers are busy people who have many important tasks at hand, including the success of their businesses. It’s the rare customer who recognizes that you and he or she have something in common.

No, consumers by definition are usually very selfish with only their own concerns in mind. When they call you, they need you. Otherwise, they don’t call. Of course, in the current state of the economy, if you’re running a business, a phone call from a customer in need should be considered a blessing. This is your bread and butter. And besides, the reason they can be swayed from their myopic vision is that they’re paying you to help them. Not vice versa.

Never mind that they may prevent you from serving the needs of other important customers who may have had their calls prioritized. It is an exercise in tact and diplomacy that gives you the right things to say to meet the demands of all customers within the given time frame. Not a single customer wants to be told they have to wait, and all deserve your best efforts to deliver what they expect from you.

Fortunately, the laws of probability often make these calls random, so you don’t get overwhelmed by the immediate rush that’s impossible to deliver. In a business like marketing, there are many different tasks that a customer may need, all of which require skills, time allocations and expectations to complete.

And of course, not all projects come as phone calls. In today’s world there are many such as email. But in any case, an immediate response is the most important course of action for you as a business owner, to provide the solution everyone is looking for. I find that most customers just want to know that they matter to you and that you appreciate their call, and that you intend to address their needs immediately. This is usually done with a quick reply or email reply confirming receipt of their message and how you intend to fulfill what they need. I also always promise to confirm when the job is done. After this, my stress level is reduced for the moment because the immediacy of the request is taken. However, as anyone who runs a business knows, chronic stress is part of success, because it keeps us from getting the work done that our customers want, as fast as possible!

The next step for the business owner is to prioritize the tasks at hand. I approach it with a number of steps in the process, when each will take and how quickly I can do them while working on multiple tasks simultaneously. For small business owners, or people who run their own businesses (like me), this usually means being busy and busy, morning, noon and night, 24/7. This is not an exaggeration. I work out every moment I can, making time for personal hygiene, eating, sleeping and an hour of daily exercise every day, without fail! Of course, I admit that I am too robotic in my life to do everything that is good for me in business. The reason is that I can easily multi-task without breaking my focus from the most important application.

An example would be answering the phone with my standard greeting without missing a beat, while using one of my many software programs to design, write, produce, enhance or transform any of the many tasks I handle daily. People often comment that I sound like a record. We laugh at this and move on. Not only is my foresight beneficial to my business, it is appreciated by my clients who can reach me on one or two rings without having to wade through the hoops and hoops of phone tips or reception to try to speak to me directly. . Sure, they sometimes get my voice mail but I always get right back and never keep them waiting.

However, I must clarify that a few years ago, when I was maintaining a formal business group in the largest city nearby, my working hours were very different. It took a good chunk of my being to keep up with my work when I was traveling on even the worst days in the winter. I used to think it was time well spent… as a “creative pause,” as a German music professor I had at Bard College called it. Time to brainstorm, plan strategy, get a complete overview of the business. However, now, because I was mature enough to realize that keeping that heavy office that I had been proud of for a 35-year career was an unexpected luxury in today’s economy and moving home was the best option for many reasons, this is my time is much better sorted.

First of all, I have a life now! How, you may ask, can I have a life where I work 24/7?!! Well, I definitely enjoy working from home because I love what I do for a living. Here are the main differences:

  • Instead of getting up at 4 a.m. to get dressed for business, read a few newspapers while eating breakfast, and drive an hour to work, I now get up at 8:15 a.m. and spend 20 minutes walking up and down the stairs for exercise (2500 steps in total!) and making a small breakfast that I eat while I check my email in my cozy office on my dining room in shorts, t-shirt and socks I check myself. My work day usually starts around 9 am which is the norm for most office workers.

  • Instead of wearing high heels while driving and to occasional client meetings that also kill a good part of the day (not to mention my feet!), I now stay home and avoid meeting anyone at all. I stay away. I fully understand email and phone and seeing me in person is unnecessary in this day and age of Internet access and video-conferencing.

  • Instead of leaving the office late, in a rat race, to make dinner after stopping at the grocery store, a gas station, and the occasional traffic jam followed by a longer walk than before. going on longer, I’m taking a break now. -Every day at 4:30 I walk with my husband and after working until 6:30, start cooking dinner after a productive 9 hour day. I am fortunate to have a retired husband/wife who does all the shopping now.

  • Instead of ending my day at 9:30pm so I can try to get enough sleep to wake up at 4 and start over, I can now watch the end of the Yankee game most nights if they still play around 10. pm is when I stop working after dinner to enjoy some TV screen and eat an apple. Bedtime for the robot is now closer to midnight, giving me about 8 hours of sleep per night compared to my previous average of 5.5 hours. This has literally given me my life back!

But many things have changed in the business since the economic collapse. It’s no surprise to hear that people work from home. He had a wonderful office for many years when people came for frequent conferences or to check evidence. There was a time when I was spending whole days in space taking quality pictures, sometimes from helicopters, using gyroscopes and expensive rented long lenses while flying over Manhattan in the now restricted airspace! Times have changed and my industry with it. We have become an online culture with everything from affordable digital photography to PDF proofs accessible by email. People are more conservative about business expenses than they used to be and the cost of gasoline and everything else has reduced how much we all do business. And, as a result, how much we pay has become an emotional issue.

I’ve reached a place in my life where money is no longer a matter of life and death, it’s not swim or swim, I’m lucky to have the freedom to negotiate reasonable rates with long-term clients I respect, who are worried about losing income. have expressed themselves. Everyone has felt it because of the reduction in business. When you get to a certain age, you realize that life doesn’t last forever and it’s more important to live life for the joy it can bring rather than some arbitrary dollar figure you once wanted. Since my house and cars are all paid off and I have the security of some decent investments, it’s more important to me to have clients who seek my intelligence and skills, and engage me in interesting work, than trying to make a fortune. I am also fortunate (and have been for most of my career) that I have never had to look for work. It just comes as it always has from the clients I’ve worked with most of my life. Those customers refer others. And, there are always new clients who find me through my website. Yes, my office was a beautiful representation of my polished business image, my brand…but I achieved the same through my website, at a very low cost!

I wrote this article, which is really more of an overview of my life, to share the types of things that lead to success. Not so much for specific information, but for the attitudinal and philosophical truths that shape human life. Always with the client first; doing the best job you can; respecting the needs of the client and his period; were frugal with spending; and above all, be fair in every way; These are the ways I have found success in my life.
