Silk Production – A Bit of History

There are few stories in human history that are as interesting as that of silk. Silk has been produced for over 5,000 years. It originated in China, and the Chinese have successfully kept the secret of silk production for several thousand years. Eventually the knowledge spread, probably via the silk road, that foreign-sounding trade route that ran from China to the Mediterranean and then by ship.

Humans started following the silk road 4000 years ago. Very few people passed through it, except Marco Polo (1256-1323), the famous explorer. Polo found silk in the many fairs and markets he visited while traveling in the Middle East, Iran, Uzbekistan and other modern-day places. In this way, the production of silk was clearly widespread in the middle ages of our era.

The secret to producing silk is to have both silkworms and silkworms, preferably the white owl, which is the sole food of the silkworm, or more precisely, silkworms. They are basically grape leaf feeding machines. When the moths are fully grown, they make a cocoon by removing the silk from their body. The extrusion starts out as a liquid and solidifies after coming into contact with air. The purpose of the cocoon is to protect the pupa, which will eventually become a silkworm, although only enough silkworms are allowed to develop to support the next generation of silkworms.

Cocoons are interesting in that they are made of only one long, thin, silken rope, and it takes skill to unravel a single rope, which is usually about 400-500 meters long. The threads, or threads, are finally woven into the fabric. Clothing is of course the main product made from silk, but other products are also produced. There are also ropes and things like parachutes and maps in World War II.

In the 15th century silk production came to France, and eventually the city of Lyon (pronounced lee on), now the third largest city in France and a major tourist destination, became the center of European silk production. Lyon still has an important silk museum. According to Dr. John Falkwell in his book “History of Silk”, in 1544 about 12 thousand people were engaged in silk production there. The industry grew steadily, and by the 1880s 200,000 people were employed in Lyon, a remarkable number.

With an eye on the success of the silk industry in France, King James I of England in the 17th century made a great effort to establish a silk industry both in England and in the colonies at that time (i.e. USA today). These efforts never really took off in the long run, and the silk industry there never came close to the level achieved in France.

Silk production is a labor-intensive endeavor, and in the early 20th century a combination of labor disputes, and especially the invention of synthetic fabrics like rayon and nylon, largely contributed to the decline of the silk industry in Europe. All that remains are small cottage industries here and there, as in several parts of England. The most productive country today is again China. India also produces a lot of silk, and they are the leading producers of wild silk, that is, silk produced from wild silkworms, especially tussah silk, from the silkworm of the same name.

The history of silk production is long and legendary. In fact, legend has it that a Chinese princess discovered how to spin silk 5,000 years ago by dropping a root into her hot cup. (Cots are soaked in hot water to remove the insect that holds the insect together.) In any case, it’s amazing that one of the most desirable fabrics in the world comes from insect secretions. What is more interesting is that the important role of this web has played in the world economy for 5000 years.
