How to Be a Successful Entrepreneur – Making Decisions, Part 1 of 6

Good luck! The New Clutch Driver at the Wheel!

I found this handwritten message on the cab of a truck the other day. I immediately turned back to stop on a hill, at an intersection, on Martha’s Vineyard, with a man yelling at me through the window, “Why don’t you learn to drive!” and thought that was exactly what I was trying to do!

When you’ve always driven an automatic, getting your business legs under you is like learning to drive a standard. Jamie, how do I start a business? What should I do? I’m new to this and it all seems overwhelming! Can you walk me through it step by step?

Yes! Just like learning to drive a standard, there are some tricks to getting the hang of it as well as some very obvious don’ts. But once you know how, you’ll be kind of hooked on your new skill and you’ll never look back!

Let’s break down the steps to get started. Use common sense. Keep your end point reasonably close to the process. It’s almost like a 6th grade English writing assignment – can you answer Who, What, When, Where, Why and How? When you can, you’re on your way! See how easy it is?

Here’s the line we’re going to go through. To start a business, take the following steps:

  1. Make decisions
  2. Take action
  3. Fail Frequently
  4. Listen carefully

If this is not the list you were expecting, let me tell you how to use these steps to get from where you are now to where you want to be – in case you have a “business”.

Let’s break down Decision Making. First, don’t skip the first few obvious steps. I understand that you can’t find a job or maybe you’re frustrated with your boss or maybe you’re ready to find meaning and make a difference in what you do. But what exactly is an entrepreneur?

Are you an entrepreneur?

What are the characteristics of a business? If you are someone who is you are an entrepreneur

  • comfortable working independently, alone, creating your own criteria, setting your own goals, working without someone watching over you, driving to self-imposed deadlines
  • comfortable networking, asking for help, sharing questions and concerns with others, getting answers, being able to organize work and celebrating creativity and people.
  • determined, able to withstand setbacks, energetic and optimistic, firm in commitment to high standards and high expectations
  • willing to let go, walk away, redirect, respond objectively to information that tells you you are on the wrong path, flexible and comfortable with constant flow.
  • a numbers person, constantly watching metrics
  • a person, according to your market, who can create a great team

In short, an entrepreneur is a complex person with completely contradictory characteristics! It’s you? Do you really want to be an entrepreneur? Before you panic, not sure if you’re crazy enough to follow this path, think about the things you’ve done in the past that you’ve really enjoyed…

  • Have you ever lost yourself in a project or activity, be it gardening, cooking, baking, playing a sport, studying a new subject, volunteering on a project, traveling to a new place? If yes, you know that when you are in that place, you don’t think that you might not have what you need.
  • Have you thrown a party, helped out in a child’s class, been on a committee, had a reunion or family get-together or a church or golf social, or in some other way, brought people together around a common theme? If yes, you are separating people.
  • If you didn’t push for yourself, were you stubborn on someone else’s behalf? Maybe a kid having a hard time on a team or in class, a spouse who was having trouble with family or at work, a friend going through a tough time, an elderly parent who needed care or help? If you have been involved in any of these situations, you have shown your perseverance and determination!

By now, you have an idea. Business skills are what we use every day in regular life. In fact, I believe that the more you use these skills consciously, the more you can develop them, the more successful you can be in any endeavor, whether you are generating income from these activities or not!

Dos and Don’ts!

It is not an all or nothing label. There is no such thing as being an entrepreneur or not. You can be very creative and use business features at home or within your department at work. Do this intentionally and you’ll grow your business muscles to the point where you’re eager to try them out on bigger projects.

  1. Do it learn, study, study, talk to people, ask questions
  2. Do it understand that ONE major movement separates entrepreneurs from their desires; entrepreneurs TAKE ACTION, TAKE ACTION, DO. At some point, sooner or later, they stop talking, reading and planning and that DO ONE TIME!
  3. Making money as a business is 100% dependent on the urgent needs and demands of the BUSINESS! There are many ideas, many devices, apps and software, and it doesn’t matter how much you love your technology and service. If you don’t solve a problem that the market doesn’t want to solve, no one will buy what you’re trying to sell. And if no one buys it, well – I think what you can do in that situation.
  4. Make sure you don’t quit your day job until you make a sale. Make sure you don’t spend all of your retirement savings without first having solid proof (sales, contracts, orders) the market wants what you have. Hint: don’t be confused – good feelings are not proof that your business concept is viable!

ACTION POINTS:

  1. List the characteristics of an entrepreneur and write down things about yourself and your activities that relate to these characteristics.
  2. Start by thinking about what you want to do and what business muscles you will work on developing.
